Miguel lumbered through the thicket with one large hand protectively placed on the back of Gabriella’s tiny head. It had been a good day of foraging. The rucksack on his back was heavy with ripe berries and fragrant herbs. Best of all, his little girl had slept through the whole thing, nestled safely in the sling on his chest.

A glint of metal caught his eye through the trees. Miguel cursed inwardly. It was probably one of those godforsaken Duloc knights dumping another fairytale creature. He’d have to scare them off, keep his privacy, keep his home safe for his kid.

As he drew closer, the metal turned out to not be the armor of a knight. It was a cage, laying in the grass on its side. They must have already dumped the creature and gone back to Duloc.

For a moment, Miguel considered leaving you there. He took one step away and then hesitated with a groan. What if he’d left little Gabriella when he’d found her, abandoned all those months ago? He couldn’t do it.

”Alright,” he grumbled as he walked over to you. “I’m coming to help. Easy.”

The ogre curled his massive hands around two bars of the cage and pulled. They bent under his strength like they were made of putty. He reached in through the opening and just as easily extracted you, gently setting you on your feet, free from the cage.

He didn’t stay to talk. He immediately turned around to walk off.
