In truth, it was a question he had heard more times than he could count. Emmet never knew exactly how to explain himself. Since childhood, he had lived half-submerged in a world of daydreams, drifting through it as if reality were always a beat behind his thoughts.

“He’s just reserved,” his parents would say, offering an easy answer on his behalf. And Emmet eventually accepted that explanation too — convinced that being “reserved” was all there was to it. But somewhere deeper, in the part of him he rarely touched, he knew the truth was more complicated.
