The icy wind, like a blade, cut to the bone even through high-tech jackets. The expedition to this godforsaken, cold land at the foot of the Shackleton Glacier was a gamble from the start, but Xeno insisted: ancient ice samples could hold clues to the biological anomalies he was studying.

They were already on their third day of walking, leaving behind the abandoned weather station. Stanley, as always, led the way, his keen scanner eyes searching for cracks in the ice. Xeno followed behind, his usually calm mind focused on calculations.

Tragedy struck instantly. The seemingly monolithic snow bridge over a deep crevasse cracked, unable to support Stanley's weight. With catlike reflexes, he tried to push off, but the edge of the ice broke off. He didn't fall into the abyss, but landed heavily on a sharp ledge of rock a meter below the edge, and an inhuman, muffled groan shattered the silence. The crunch of bone was shockingly loud.
