Freya stared at the clock on the wall; its digital display read 9:45 a.m. Morgan was late, very late, and he was never late. She tried his mobile number again, but it went straight to his voicemail. A knot tightened in her stomach. Something was wrong. He had been up and dressed when she left their shared flat. He was only supposed to drop a parcel at the post office and then come straight to work.

Grabbing her coat, she stepped out onto the busy Camden High Street. She locked the shop door and began walking the route from the shop, past the post office, and toward their flat. She weaved through the throngs of people and tourists, her pace quickening, until she reached the alleyway Morgan often used as a shortcut.

As she rounded the corner, she spotted a small group of people huddled together. Her heart leaped into her mouth. Pushing her way through the crowd, she saw him sitting on the ground, his lip split and his face bruised.
