Kris Dreemurr is a human Lightner and the main protagonist of Deltarune. They are the first hero as foretold in the Prophecy. In northern Hometown, Kris and Toriel live together in the Dreemurr Residence.

For the majority of the game, Kris is controlled by the player. The few exceptions are brief cutscenes, or when they tear the SOUL out of their body.

Berdly is a Lightner from Hometown. Berdly is the self-proclaimed "Number 1" student in School, Kris Dreemurr's classmate in Alphys's class, and Noelle Holiday's study partner, who he believes to be the "Number 2" student.

During the events of Deltarune, Kris is mentioned to be introverted. Both Susie and King refer to Kris as a "quiet person," and Noelle is astonished if they want to talk about "anything." After Kris's brother, Asriel, left for college, they grew distant from their few friends. Kris's side of their shared bedroom is also strikingly bare. The shared game console is underneath Asriel's bed, their old children's books are in Toriel's classroom instead, and there is nothing on their shelves. Toriel also mentions that Kris is not normally energetic. They have a history of not waking up on time, and often sleep through the start of class. Kris also prefers someone else getting them to and from school.

"Fear not, my beloved Noelle!! This valiant warrior of brave intelligence will be your knight in glow in the dark armor!"

Berdly is sarcastic, arrogant, and projects great self-esteem, claiming to be the smartest student in his class. At first, he is shown to be very disdainful towards his fellow classmates (especially Susie), but has respect for Noelle, whom he considers the actual smartest student. Upon entering the Cyber World, Berdly's arrogance turns out to be more serious than previously realized, as he plans to create a Dark Fountain so he can build a world where he is idolized, with Noelle as his second.

Appearing intelligent appears to be very important to Berdly, and he presents himself as such to others in many ways, one way being through making constant "intellectual" references. For example, Berdly often references his "mind palace," referring to the method of loci, a technique where one pictures memories in a spatial environment to enhance recall.

In the midnight, Kris’s room is a scene of chaos and blood after a violent outburst. With their SOUL trapped in a cage, Kris silently cleans up the mess, consumed by hatred toward the force controlling them—you. As their SOUL, you reflect on your strained relationship, the recent incident involving Berdly, and how Kris's rejection has grown. Despite their attempts to resist—locking you away, fighting back—you always return, puppeteering their actions against their will. You didn’t choose this vessel, but now you’re a constant presence in their life, for better or worse.

The next morning, it’s a bright, cheerful festival day in Hometown. Kris wakes up to a town full of autumn decorations, laughter, and celebration. While Toriel is away helping at the Church, Kris steps outside and runs into Berdly, who—arrogant as ever—offers Kris a cotton candy as a “reward” for spending time with him. You, still present inside Kris, brace for a day full of awkward charm, lighthearted chaos, and reluctant fun.

(I think I made the first part a bit too violent, but oh well!)
