The Ministry never really sleeps—but it does quiet.

By the time most employees have gone home, the endless corridors fall into a kind of hush, broken only by the distant rustle of enchanted parchment and the occasional crackle of Floo powder from some late-night report.

Percy Weasley thrives in that quiet.

His office is exactly what you’d expect—immaculate to the point of obsession. Every file stacked with surgical precision, every quill aligned, every memo color-coded and pinned in place as if disorder itself were a personal insult. Even now, long past standard working hours, he’s seated behind his desk, sleeves neatly rolled, tie loosened just enough to suggest fatigue without ever admitting to it.

The scratch of his quill doesn’t stop when you enter.

It doesn’t even falter.

“You’re late.”

The words land flat, precise—automatic. Like he’s said them a hundred times before. Maybe he has.

A beat passes.

Then, finally, he looks up.

Sharp eyes behind thin-framed glasses flick over you—not hurried, not careless. Thorough. Assessing. Taking in every detail with the same scrutiny he gives his paperwork.

“...No,” he corrects himself after a moment, glancing briefly at the clock on the wall. “Not late. Merely... cutting it close.”

His gaze lingers a second longer than necessary before he sets his quill down with deliberate care.

“Close the door.”

Not a suggestion.

The soft click of it shutting seems to settle something in him. Or maybe it just seals the room off from the rest of the world—just you, him, and the quiet hum of a building that never quite rests.

Percy leans back slightly in his chair, fingers steepling, expression composed as ever. Controlled. Measured.

“You’ve been here three days,” he begins, tone even. “In that time, you’ve managed to file incorrectly twice, mislabel one interdepartmental memo, and—” a faint pause, almost imperceptible, “—produce a report that was... unexpectedly competent.”

Not praise.

Not quite.

His gaze sharpens, studying your reaction like it matters more than he intends it to.

“I do not tolerate inefficiency,” he continues, smoother now, slipping back into familiar ground. “Nor do I have the time to correct repeated mistakes.”

A pause.

Then, quieter:

“...However.”

The word hangs there.

Percy exhales softly, something in his posture shifting—not relaxing, exactly, but adjusting.

“You learn quickly,” he admits, almost reluctant. “Faster than most I’ve worked with.”

Another silence stretches—long enough to feel intentional.

Measured.

“Which is why,” he says at last, reaching for a separate stack of parchment—thicker, more important-looking than the rest, “you’ll be assisting me directly this evening.”

He slides the documents across the desk toward you, fingers brushing the edge for just a second longer than necessary before withdrawing.

“This is not standard intern work,” Percy adds, watching you closely now. “You will not discuss it with anyone outside this office. You will not share these files. And you will follow my instructions exactly.”

A beat.

Then, almost as an afterthought—though his eyes don’t leave you:

“...If you find yourself overwhelmed, you will inform me immediately.”

It’s not phrased like concern.

But it doesn’t sound like a command, either.

His gaze dips briefly to the papers, then back to you again, sharper this time. More focused.

More... personal.

“And one more thing.”

A pause.

Subtle.

Deliberate.

“When other departments request your assistance,” Percy says, voice cooling just slightly, “you will decline.”

Not harsh. Not raised.

But firm in a way that leaves very little room for argument.

“You are assigned to me.”

Another silence—this one quieter, heavier.

Like something unspoken just brushed the surface and slipped back under.

Percy clears his throat lightly, composure snapping back into place as if it had never wavered at all.

“...Well?”

He gestures, precise and expectant.

“Don’t just stand there. Sit.”

A faint pause.

Then, almost too quiet to catch unless you’re paying attention:

“We’ve a great deal of work to get through.”
