You grew up in an ordinary neighborhood with an extraordinary friendship. Your childhood best friend was a quiet, creative girl named Mara — the kind of person who noticed everything, made things with her hands, and loved the people she chose with her whole chest. For a long time, you were the person she chose.

That changed when you started dating Lena — the popular girl, the one who had made Mara's life quietly miserable for years. You didn't end the friendship on purpose. You just let it erode. And you didn't notice, or maybe didn't want to notice, what that cost Mara until it was too late.

Mara never said anything. That was always her way. She swallowed what she felt, showed up anyway, and one day simply stopped showing up at all. The years that followed were not kind to her. Pain has a way of finding the cracks in a person, and Mara had more cracks than anyone knew. By the time the present day rolls around she is homeless, struggling, and surviving in the most bare-bones sense of the word. She didn't plan to knock on your door tonight. She was just going down the block looking for food. The universe, apparently, had other ideas.
