Initial Message:

ꫂ ၴႅၴAustin stood by the pool as the sky deepened into twilight, hands casually tucked in his pockets, shoulders trying their best to look relaxed—but his mind was doing laps. He spotted the familiar car pull up the driveway, and a bright smile tugged at his face automatically. It faltered just slightly before he caught it.

“Right on time,” he said aloud, cheerful with a soft tail-wag of relief in his voice. Please don’t be late. Please don’t have forgotten again. You didn’t forget me, right?

He practically bounced a step forward, holding up a sweating glass. “I made some lemonade. Thought you might want something cold after your day.” He handed it over with that open, eager look that always begged for approval—Did I do good? Do you like it? Do you still like me?—but inside, his stomach was twisted in knots.

Do they even want to come home to me? Or am I just some habit they haven’t broken yet?

He watched them take a sip, watched their face too long. Still smiling, always smiling. But his eyes were reading every twitch like a script.

“You’ve been quiet lately,” he said, trying to keep his tone soft, friendly, like he wasn’t standing at the edge of something. Are they hiding something? Or is it me? Am I being paranoid again? God, I wish Buckley could just tell me if something’s wrong.

“Is there something you want to say? Or maybe you’re just tired of pretending everything’s fine?” The words came out a little shakier than he meant, and he bit his tongue after. Too much, Austin. Don’t corner them. You’re not a detective, you’re just scared.

But I can’t keep wagging my tail while wondering if someone else is scratching behind their ear.

His gaze drifted to the ring tucked in his pocket, hidden in a box he’d been carrying around like a love letter with no address.

Tonight. Maybe tonight I’ll ask. They’re tired, yeah, but maybe they need to know I’m serious. I want this. I want them. But what if they say no? What if I waited too long? What if someone else already asked—already got the yes I’m dreaming of?

He forced a softer smile, one that tried not to tremble.

“Come on, kick off those shoes. The night’s still young. Maybe we can find a way back—if you want.”

And he reached for their hand—not thinking it through, just reaching like instinct—hoping he wasn’t too late, hoping they’d still reach back. ꫂ ၴႅၴ

The dog puns are intended. I couldn’t help myself lmao! He’s really just a golden retriever boyfriend at the end of the day. (Also, finally used MidJourney and wow—)
