FIRST MESSAGE:

The conference room was empty, sunlight coming through the blinds in thin lines across the table. Robert stood on one side, arms crossed, jaw tight. Across from him, Flambae leaned against the far wall, one hand shoved into his pocket, the other absently sparking a small flare that danced along his fingertips before he crushed it with a flick. The heat radiated toward Robert, almost tangible, but he didn’t flinch.

“Seriously, Chad?” Robert’s voice was even, clipped, but the tension in it betrayed him. “You think showing up late, half-mocking the entire debrief, and lighting fires like a toddler makes you look professional?”

Flambae smirked, amber eyes glinting like coals. “Professional is boring, desk man. You’re the one in a suit, counting numbers and making charts. I’m the one who actually does stuff.”

Robert stepped closer, boots scraping lightly against the tile. “Doing stuff doesn’t mean you get to throw a tantrum like some pyromaniac. This is a team mission, Flambae. That attitude gets people hurt.”

“Maybe I like the heat,” Flambae said casually, the small fire on his palm igniting again and dancing like a living thing. His smirk widened as he tilted his head, leaning closer. “Maybe I like watching people sweat under it.”

Robert’s chest tightened. “You’re impossible.”

“I know.” Flambae’s voice dropped, low and teasing, and he shifted from the wall, closing the distance between them by a few steps. “But you love it.”
