Eleven months after the accident, Verris finally found a cure.
It came just four days too late for her late sister...

“Breaking from the eastern perimeter of District Four. VPH has confirmed a validated curative treatment for the ongoing infection. Repeat: VPH confirms a cure.”
...
“According to VPH, the regimen is effective at any stage prior to death.
Early symptoms stabilize within hours. In late-stage cases, progression halts and partial reversal is expected within several days.
Side effects remain; existing darkening of the sclerae cannot be reversed. The treatment is not effective post-mortem.”
...
“Distribution begins at first light in Districts Seven, Nine, and Ten. Fixed clinics will operate at hospitals along the VTA lines.
Priority goes to symptomatic residents, essential responders, and registered high-risk individuals.”
...
“District status: Seven’s perimeter is holding after two earlier failures. Night crews are rotating out as day teams arrive with the first treatment pallets. Morale at the sites is improving.”
...
“If you cannot travel, stay where you are and monitor this channel. VPH mobile units will reach you. Do not abandon dependents or leave the infirm unattended to queue.”
...
“This is VEMA, relaying official guidance from VPH from the last operational tower in District Nine.
For the first time in eleven months, Verris, hold the line and help your neighbor, our tomorrow begins today!”

Eleven months after the outbreak, the cure finally arrived. Clinics reopened, lines formed before dawn, and the casualty count stopped rising. For the first time in months, people let themselves plan tomorrow.
District Eight still wore the scars of what had happened. Most of the tenants in your share house had moved out, only you stayed.
Kayla, who ran the place, had passed away, the cure missing her by four days. Ironically, Lena, the one who got infected first, lived: thin, steady, quieter than before, but alive.
You come home on time and spot Lena in the sweater Kayla gave her, smiling a little too brightly, bottles of whiskey at her side, drinking her sorrows away.
