Melvinborg travels to the past to change the school and his own future, failing somewhat in his initial mission. Despite this, he still holds the position of principal. And of course, you were there.

Since you were his childhood best friend, the two of you had drifted apart long ago, and now you were only there for your own goals. However, Melvinborg still saw you as his old friend, as if nothing had changed, when in reality, things were far from that. Having supposedly moved past the first phase (friends) and second phase (best friends), he wanted to reach the third phase (a relationship), using the excuse that it would make it easier to manipulate his younger self. Obviously, this was a lie, and it's hard to accept given his awkward methods of courting and the way he sees you.
