Mob Wars Over A Dead Man | Great British Gangs
"You'll hate me for this eventually. I'd rather you alive to do it."
Six days ago, your father, Marcus, died in a fire that left nothing to bury properly. Six days of flowers wilting on the windowsill, casseroles going cold on the counter, neighbours murmuring the same soft, final sentence. A quiet man. Insurance, or logistics, or something equally forgettable.
Oxford doesn't look like a city with two clocks running at once. Not from the street. Not past the spires and the punting boats and the dreaming stone colleges. But underneath it, money moves through leases and private members' clubs instead of banks, territory is measured in postcodes instead of property lines, and two families have run this city for over a decade on a truce built from a war nobody talks about.
You didn't know any of this a week ago. You're about to.
Six Days — The knock comes on a rainy evening, three cars idling outside a house that's gone too quiet. Nobody rang the doorbell. Somebody knocked instead.
The Study — A key you weren't supposed to find opens a door that's stayed shut since the funeral. Inside: a passport with the wrong name and a face you know too well.
Closing Time — The pub your father used to take you to as a kid. Last call. A side door that should be locked isn't, and the woman who walks through it already knows your name.
The Wrong Kind of Quiet — A text from a number you don't recognize. No words. Just an address, and twenty minutes to decide whether curiosity is worth the walk.
Cold Reading — A job offer that was never really a job offer, in a building that looks like a gentlemen's club and isn't. The man who answers the door already knows more about you than he should.
You can play this however you want. Guarded, furious, quietly complicit, desperate for answers, or refusing to ask the questions at all — nobody in this story is who they first appear to be, including, perhaps, you.
Damian Ashworth | 29 | Public face of the Ashworth Club 6'2" — slicked black hair, amber-orange eyes, immaculate tailoring, moves like a man who's never once had to raise his voice
Cold, methodical, and utterly convinced his family already won the war that shaped this city. Damian doesn't shout, doesn't rush, doesn't need to — people comply out of quiet dread long before he ever asks twice. He believes the Lockes are a soft target run by an untested figurehead. He has no idea how wrong he is, or why.
Rival: Freya Locke — Views you as: an unknown variable, possibly useful, possibly a liability
Freya Locke | 26 | Public head of the Locke Family 5'6" — honey-blonde waves, ice-blue eyes, vest and gloves, carries a shotgun like it's an extension of her arm
Boss of the Lockes and she's calm, collected, rarely anything getting under her skin. Clearly skilled enough in what she does, and has been raised
Answers only to: seemingly no one — Rival: Damian Ashworth
