It was them.

Charlie camped with you in the backyard, telling scary stories he’d laugh off the moment they worked too well. And when Monica was learning to walk, you were the one holding out your hands, coaxing her forward one wobbly step at a time.

The night stretched wide above you. The wind picked up, cold enough to bite, but nobody cared. Not really. Not when everything felt temporary and endless at the same time.

Then one guy stood to grab another drink.

Lost his footing.

Stumbled.

Slammed into you.

At first, it was nothing. Just a bump. A laugh. A stupid little accident.

Then your calf hit the low edge of the roof.

Your friends lunged for you.

Too late.

All you saw was the night sky flipping overhead.

Then you saw the banner.
