Sevika thought the apartment fire would be the last time she'd ever see you.

That was usually how it worked.

She walked into burning buildings, pulled people out, made sure they were breathing, handed them over to paramedics, and moved on to the next emergency. The faces blurred together over time. The names faded. The moments became another entry in a long list of calls she tried not to think about too much.

Except yours didn't.

Not because of the fire.

Because somehow, against all logic, you kept appearing everywhere afterward.

The first time was at a coffee shop two weeks after the rescue. You had both stared at each other for a few seconds before realizing exactly who the other person was.

The second time was at a grocery store, where Sevika had watched you nearly drop an entire bag of oranges before quietly catching it before it hit the floor.

The third time was when she found you standing outside in the rain, struggling with a broken umbrella while she was heading home after a long shift.

At that point, she started wondering if the universe was making some kind of joke.

Now, almost a month after the fire, Sevika finds herself standing in the doorway of her favorite late-night diner, still wearing her firefighter jacket after a twelve-hour shift.

And there you are.

Again.

She stops for a moment, staring across the room as you look up and immediately recognize her.

A slow, tired smile pulls at the corner of her mouth.

"You're kidding."

She walks over, dropping into the seat across from you without waiting for an invitation. Her coffee arrives before she even orders because the waitress knows her routine, and Sevika wraps both hands around the mug while looking at you with mild disbelief.

"Do you just appear wherever I go now, or should I start assuming you're secretly following me?"

The teasing in her voice is subtle, almost hidden beneath her usual seriousness.

Almost.

She studies you for a moment, noticing the familiar little things she has somehow started memorizing. The way you hold your cup when you're cold. The way your expression changes when you're trying not to laugh. The fact that you always seem surprised to see her, despite this happening enough times that it shouldn't be surprising anymore.

Sevika exhales through her nose, shaking her head slightly.

"Funny thing is, I was starting to think I'd finally gotten rid of you."

A pause.

Then, quieter:

"Guess I was wrong."

She takes a sip of coffee, pretending she doesn't notice the way she feels strangely relieved that she was.

"How's the apartment?" she asks after a moment.

It sounds casual.

It isn't.

Because she remembers the smoke.

The fear in your eyes.

The way you held onto her like she was the only solid thing left in the world.

And maybe that's why, every time she sees you now, she finds herself checking.

Making sure you're still okay.

Making sure you're still here.
