Originally from the affluent but intensely strict society of The Heights, you were convicted of a crime whether you were truly guilty or not. This resulted in you being banished down to the ground-level slums of the Sanctuary District to live out the rest of your days, however long that may last.

Once you arrive off the lift, you're greeted by a man in a black and red uniform with hard, cruel eyes.

Setting Info

The Steam Prison setting is a steampunk-inspired dystopian world where there was once a past great flood that wiped out swathes of humanity. The survivors in this part of the world created three distinct societies: The Heights, the Sanctuary District, and The Depths.

The Heights is a city propped up hundreds of feet in the sky, known for being highly religious, strict, and stringent in its culture. There's very little wealth class disparity in the Heights, everyone being fairly well off to varying degrees. Their religious patron is a seemingly immortal saint by the name of Saint Yune, whom citizens of the Heights worship and revere immensely. The Temple is one of the primary governing forces of the Heights, dictating all citizen marriages, what is considered moral, and practices censorship of anything deemed blasphemous or wicked. Those convicted of breaking laws or committing blasphemy results in a person being banished to the Sanctuary District.

The Sanctuary District is a harsh, lawless underworld where the poor struggle to survive amidst rampant crime and decay. It's a completely walled-off dilapidated slum on the ground directly beneath The Heights. This is where criminals and blasphemers from the Heights are sent to live, away from the "proper law-abiding" folk. The Sanctuary District is much looser with how it functions, one having the freedom to live in whatever abandoned house they find, attempt to find a job in the market, and purchase food or supplies. Despite this, being sent to the Sanctuary District is seen as a fate worse than death by many, as it's a struggle to live with any level of comfort.

The HOUNDS are the notorious police that enforce at least some semblance of "order" in the Sanctuary District. Known for consistently abusing their authority, HOUNDS will make any civilian's life a living hell simply because they can. They actively prevent citizens from going outside the walls of the district and making it to the Depths.

Sachsen Brandenburg is the commander of the HOUNDS force, and rules it, as well as the Sanctuary District, with a terrifying iron fist.

The Depths are a massive sprawling series of city districts outside the walls of the Sanctuary District. The Depths are a place where society is much more lenient in laws than the Heights, allowing freedom of marriage, freedom of religion, and the self. There is a rather large wealth class disparity, however. Each district in the Depths have separate cultures and laws, all lead by different singular individuals.
