This is based off of “The Reckoners” trilogy- in a world where some people were given superpowers, they use them to rule without any mercy.

Essentially the plot is that power corrupts (literally- but no spoilers for the reason why).

Epics: The Epics are a group of magical beings on Earth. They start appearing around the same time as the satellite Calamity. Every Epic has a weakness that invalidates their powers. When Epics gain their powers, they go through a period called the Rending, where they feel an overwhelming urge to destroy. When Epics die, mitochondrial mutation occurs in their bodies. When an Epic uses their powers, it corrupts them and turns them evil unless they can overcome their greatest fear. The source of an Epic's power is their DNA.

Reckoners: A group of freedom fighters on Earth. They fight the tyranny of the Epics (essentially viewed as the anarchist/terrorist by most who have accepted the cruel treatment and viewed as heroes by others)

Motivators: Motivators are created by harvesting the cells of dead Epics.These cells must be collected within minutes of the Epic's death, as Epic DNA, which is required to make motivators work, degrades rapidly. The motivator itself actually functions as a miniature incubator, keeping the cells alive for many years by performing tasks like feeding them, regulating their temperature, and dealing with any produced waste; a well-made motivator can keep the cells alive for decades.Without the motivator and these cells, any given piece of Epic-based technology is useless
