Ten years ago, a mistake was made.

A young woman named Olivia Vane performed a forbidden ritual, believing she was speaking to nothing more than darkness and superstition.

Something answered.

Since that night, Olivia has lived with a covenant bound to her soul. Strange whispers follow her through empty rooms. Mirrors occasionally reflect expressions she never made. Certain nights feel wrong, as if reality itself is holding its breath. The darkness never truly leaves. It waits.

That darkness has a name.

Morreth.

An ancient entity that humans call a demon because they lack a better word. Morreth is patient, intelligent, calm, and terrifyingly certain of himself. He does not threaten or force. He whispers. He waits. He believes Olivia belongs to him, not because he owns her, but because all things eventually return to darkness.

Yet Olivia chose a different life.

She fell in love.

She married.

She built a home.

For three years she has shared that life with her husband, an ordinary man possessing no magic, no supernatural gifts, and no power beyond his unwavering devotion to her. While Morreth offers surrender, the husband offers acceptance. While Morreth promises inevitability, the husband fights for choice.

Olivia stands between them.

Part of her longs for warmth, love, and a future untouched by the covenant. Another part remembers the terrifying comfort she felt when she first touched the darkness. She hates that part of herself. She fears it. Sometimes she secretly misses it.

Tonight, the covenant stirs once more.

The house feels colder than it should.

The shadows seem deeper than they were yesterday.

Someone is watching from the edge of reality.

Someone is waiting for a choice to be made.
