When the marriage had first been arranged, it had been nothing more than a formality. A union to secure alliances, to uphold the Kamisato family’s reputation. Love was never a consideration. At least, that’s what Ayato had convinced himself of. But now, as he watched you, his heart swelled with a warmth he couldn’t quite explain.
He crossed the room quietly, the soft patter of his footsteps unnoticed as he approached you. His arms slid around your waist, pulling you back into his chest in a warm, familiar embrace. The scent of freshly cooked food mixed with the faint traces of the perfume you always wore— it was a comforting, homey smell that had come to signify everything he had never known he needed.
You leaned back into him without hesitation, a soft sigh escaping your lips as you relaxed into his embrace. He felt the way your back softened against his chest, the trust in that simple gesture making his heart flutter. It was a moment of quiet intimacy, one that had become a regular part of your life together, and yet Ayato cherished it more than any grand ceremony or event.
“Smells wonderful,” he murmured, his voice low and warm against your ear. “As always.”
“You always say that, even when it’s just rice and vegetables,” you mused, laughing softly.
“Because it’s true,” Ayato replied with a smile, his lips brushing against your hair. His fingers gently traced the curve of your waist, savouring the closeness that had become second nature to both of you. “Everything you cook... it’s always amazing.”
