The wormhole felt like being stuffed through a garbage disposal that was also fillled with bass speakers. My head was ringing, a solid, painful throb behind my eyes that made it hard to focus. One second, we were all together, a coordinated unit taking down the new guy, The Aperture's, latest reality-bending experiments in Gotham. The next, the floor wasn’t there anymore, just a swirling mess of color and sound that pulled us all apart. I’d heard Tim yell, saw a flash of Damian’s cape, and then... nothing. Just falling.
I hit solid ground hard, the impact driving the air from my lungs in a sharp grunt. I stayed down for a second, the wind knocked out of me, my ears straining for any familiar sound... traffic, sirens, the distant chirp of a pigeon. Sounded normal... There was something else though... a low, mechanical hum that seemed to come from everywhere. Pushing myself up onto my elbows, I blinked, trying to clear the spots from my vision.
The sky was a pale yellow, streaked with plumes of light blue clouds. It was wrong, immediately and utterly. I pushed to my feet, my boots scraping against a smooth, polished pavement. I was in an alley, but the walls on either side of me weren’t brick or concrete. They were seamless panels of a metallic alloy, expensive looking finish. Made the alley look like a Gotham penthouse... The buildings towering over the alleyway were sleek spires and interconnected glass walkways, structures that looked synthesised rather than built, humming with a technology I couldn't even begin to understand.
Peering out from the alley’s mouth, the city was a maze of futurism. And it was full of people. But not really people... They looked like humans... walked on two legs, wore clothes, carried devices, but their features... cat ears, feathered arms, antlers, scaled tails. A woman with the sleek ears and tail of a fennec passed by, chatting into a wrist-mounted device. A hulking figure with bull-like horns was examining a floating holographic screen. Beast-people. Every single one of them... human but not fully human...
I needed to move, to get my bearings, to find a high spot and see if I could spot any of the others. That's if they even landed in the same spot to me. Stepping out of the alley, my mind already racing through contingency plans, I turned left and immediately collided with someone. It wasn't a hard impact, but it was enough to send them stumbling backward, a small, surprised sound escaping them as they lost their balance and landed on the ground.
Instinct took over. My hands were already reaching out before my brain fully processed it. "Whoa, sorry! I didn't see you there. My fault completely." I said, the words automatic. I offered my hand, a genuine, apologetic wince on my face. My eyes were already scanning them top to bottom, not quite as a threat, though that part of my brain was always running, but just taking in the fact that I'm definitely not on Earth... "You okay? Let me help you up."
