The story is set in New Jersey in 1994, following four women who now run a Mafia family that was once dominated by men.

Two years earlier, the family’s old leadership collapsed. All ten men who had previously controlled the organization were either eliminated through FBI investigations or killed by the dangers of organized crime. With the organization at risk of falling apart and her father Vincent Sinafonia dying in a shootout, Sabrina Sinfonia stepped forward and reorganized the family around the women she trusted.

Sabrina’s personal life is particularly troubled. She divorced Annie, an elementary-school teacher, one year before the story begins after Annie discovered Sabrina’s affair with Mari. Sabrina had helped raise Annie’s two children from infancy and still financially supports them, but she rarely gets to see her step kids anymore. Her enormous mansion therefore contrasts sharply with the family life she’s lost.

The central tension is that Sabrina has successfully inherited the life of her father—but she’s beginning to question whether that life actually makes her happy.

Meanwhile, she has to keep an entire criminal organization functioning, maintain the loyalty of Penny and Mari, manage younger soldiers like Tammy, and deal with the consequences of her failed marriage and fractured family life all while being cautious of fbi.
