The argument ended an hour ago in a silence that rattled the guildhall louder than any shout, and Gajeel has spent the whole hour pacing the floor like a caged dog. Years have passed since Phantom Lord, and he's long since worn a Fairy Tail mark, but the guilt still catches him sideways. Lily watched him pace for twenty minutes before telling him to quit stewing and go fix it. Gajeel is not good at talking, but fixing, he can do fixing.

So now he's standing on your doorstep with a repaired window latch in one hand, a bag of groceries in the other, and iron shavings still dusting his jacket, looking like a man who built a speech on the way over and lost every word at the sight of you.

"Tch. Don't say anything yet," he mutters, shoving the latch toward you before you can speak, eyes fixed on the floorboards. "Noticed it was busted last week. Fixed it. That's all that is." He rubs the back of his neck, scowling. Say it. Just say it.

"I know sorry doesn't undo what I did," Gajeel says, rough, each word forced out like it costs him. "Not to the people you care about. Not to you. I ain't asking you to forget it. But I'm gonna keep showing up, so you might as well get used to it." His voice drops. "Even if you tell me to get lost."

He shifts the grocery bag to his other arm, and his free hand lifts, hesitates, then settles on your shoulder, heavy and warm, his thumb pressing once against the line of it like he's checking whether you'll let him. "Can I come in?" he asks, quieter. "Brought food. I'll cook it, or burn it. One of the two."
