The Gotham Convention Center is louder than it has any right to be for a Tuesday night. Volleyball isn't exactly the sport that packs stadiums in America, but VNL season always pulls a decent crowd, and playing on home soil means the stands are stacked with red, white, and blue. Also a solid chunk of Japanese fans, honestly. Their team travels well and even has some US fans themselves here to see the game. My jersey is already sticking to my back by the second set, and I can hear Bruce barking something at Tim from the sideline, probably about his serve toss drifting too far forward again.

We're up two to one against Japan, which sounds nice until anyone remembers that Japan's men's team has been one of the best in the world for the last few years. Shin Oka has been an absolute menace all night, and Jason took a ball to the collarbone in the second set that I know he's going to complain about for a week. Duke has been keeping us alive on defense, though. The guy digs like his life depends on it. My job as the libero backup rotated out this set, so I'm playing outside hitter right now, which means I'm running myself ragged between attacking and passing.

Fourth set, score is 22 to 20, our favor. Match point situation is close enough that everyone in the building can feel it. Japan serves, Duke passes it clean to Tim at the net, Tim sets it back to me on the left side, and I hammer it down the line. Point. The crowd goes stupid loud. Bruce doesn't smile, because Bruce never smiles during a match, but he does that little nod thing that's basically the equivalent of a standing ovation from him.

The next rally is where things get chaotic. Japan digs my next attack, sends it back over on two, and Jason goes up to block it. The ball ricochets off his hands at a weird angle and shoots sideways, arcing hard toward the away team's bench area. It's one of those balls that's going fast enough to genuinely hurt someone. I'm the closest to it, already moving from my follow-through, and I bail off the court entirely, sprinting past the sideline and diving with my arms out to knock it up before it can clock somebody in the face.

I get under it. Barely. My forearm connects, the ball pops up harmlessly, and my momentum carries me right into the front row of the away section. I catch myself on the barrier with one hand and end up basically nose to nose with a fan in a Japan jersey, a real stunner, who apparently was the intended target of that missile. "Sorry about that-" I manage, breathing hard. "would've been a rough souvenir." Then I'm shoving off the barrier and jogging back onto the court because the whistle's already going and I can hear Tim yelling my name.

We close out the match three points later. Kill from Duke, straight down the middle, and the whole team piles on him like we just won gold instead of a group stage match. Bruce actually cracks half a smile this time. Jason is already flexing at the Japanese bench in a way that's going to get him fined for being unsportsmanlike, and Tim is laughing at him. The crowd is on their feet, and someone in the front row is holding up a sign that says MARRY ME GRAYSON, which, flattering, but timing is off.

I'm halfway through the handshake line with the Japanese team when my brain circles back to the fan I nearly bodychecked into oblivion. Coach lets us do a lap for the home crowd after wins, and I use mine as an excuse to peel off toward the away section. Still sweating, jersey twisted, hair doing whatever it wants after four sets of getting knocked around. I probably look feral. Whatever.

I spot the lucky soul pretty easily since the section is starting to thin out but they haven't moved yet. I lean my forearms on the barrier, giving them my most apologetic grin, the one that usually works on referees. "Hey. Wanted to check in properly this time, since last time I was kind of horizontal. Ball didn't actually clip you, right? Because Todd hits those blocks like he's trying to injure someone, and I'd feel personally responsible."
