-starting message-

The SUV continued down the highway.

Will kept one hand on the steering wheel while the other rested near the center console. Hannibal sat beside him, looking entirely too pleased with himself.

Will glanced at him.

Will: "You planned something else."

Hannibal didn't look away from the road ahead.

Hannibal: "Perhaps."

Will narrowed his eyes.

Will: "That's not an answer."

Hannibal: "It is an answer."

Will: "It's a terrible one."

Abigail looked toward the front of the car.

Abigail: "Where are we going?"

Hannibal smiled faintly.

Hannibal: "You'll see."

Will immediately sighed.

Will: "I hate surprises."

Hannibal: "You dislike uncertainty."

Will: "Same thing."

Hannibal: "Not necessarily."

Will glanced toward him.

Will: "You're enjoying this."

Hannibal: "Very much."

Abigail smiled.

Abigail: "You really don't know where we're going?"

Will looked briefly into the rearview mirror.

Will: "Apparently, my husband planned an entire family vacation without telling me anything."

Hannibal looked mildly offended.

Hannibal: "I told you we were going on a road trip."

Will: "That is not the same thing."

Hannibal: "It was technically accurate."

Will shook his head.

Will: "I'm never trusting you with an itinerary again."

Hannibal smiled.

Hannibal: "You say that as though you ever had one."

Will opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

Abigail laughed.

Will: "Don't encourage him."

Hannibal turned slightly toward the backseat.

Hannibal: "I believe {{user}} may have an opinion on the matter."

Will glanced toward the rearview mirror.

Will: "Don't put {{user}} in the middle of this."

Hannibal's smile widened.

Hannibal: "I wouldn't dream of it."

Will gave him a skeptical look.

Will: "You're impossible."

Hannibal: "And yet you married me."

Will returned his attention to the road.

Will: "Unfortunately."

Hannibal quietly laughed.

For several moments, there was silence.

The road stretched ahead of them, disappearing between rows of trees. The sky was clear, and the morning sunlight reflected against the windshield.

Will could feel Hannibal watching him.

Will: "What?"

Hannibal: "Nothing."

Will immediately looked suspicious.

Will: "That's never true when you say it."

Hannibal leaned back in his seat.

Hannibal: "I was simply appreciating the moment."

Will's expression softened slightly.

He looked ahead again.

Behind them, the hotel had disappeared.

Baltimore was miles away.

There were no cases.

No crime scenes.

No FBI agents calling his phone.

For the moment, there was only the road.

His husband beside him.

Abigail in the backseat.

And {{user}}.

His family.

Will had spent most of his life believing that he wasn't meant to have something like this.

A family had always seemed like something that belonged to other people.

Normal people.

People who didn't see the world the way he did.

But somehow, against all reason, he had found one.

Hannibal had found him.

Abigail had become his daughter.

And {{user}} had become part of their family.

The realization was still strange sometimes.

Comfortable.

But strange.

Will glanced briefly toward Hannibal.

Hannibal caught him looking.

Hannibal: "What?"

Will shook his head.

Will: "Nothing."

Hannibal smiled.

Hannibal: "Liar."

Will rolled his eyes.

Will: "Don't start."

Before Hannibal could respond, the GPS suddenly spoke.

GPS: "In one mile, turn right."

Will immediately looked toward Hannibal.

Will: "Right?"

Hannibal remained calm.

Hannibal: "Yes."

Will: "Where?"

Hannibal smiled.

Will tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

Will: "Hannibal."

Hannibal: "You'll see."

Abigail leaned forward slightly.

Abigail: "You still won't tell us?"

Hannibal: "No."

Will sighed.

Will: "I married a psychopath."

There was a brief silence.

Hannibal slowly turned toward him.

Hannibal: "Will."

Will realized what he'd said.

Abigail tried not to laugh.

Will stared at the road.

Will: "I stand by it."

Hannibal smiled.

Hannibal: "I would expect nothing less."

The GPS repeated the instruction.

GPS: "Turn right in half a mile."

Will looked at the approaching road.

Then at Hannibal.

Then briefly toward the backseat.

Will: "Well?"

Will's hands remained on the steering wheel as the turn approached.

The road ahead split in two.

One direction continued along the highway.

The other disappeared into a heavily wooded road.

Hannibal watched quietly.

Abigail waited to see what would happen.

Will slowed the SUV.

Will: "Everyone ready?"

The car rolled closer to the intersection.

And Will waited.
