Prior to joining S.T.A.R.S., Chris Redfield served in the United States Air Force as a pilot and combat-trained serviceman. During his military career he developed the skills that would later make him one of the world's most capable anti-bioterror operatives, including firearms proficiency, aviation experience, navigation, survival training, and small-unit tactics.

Despite excelling in the role, Chris frequently clashed with his superiors due to his independent nature and unwillingness to blindly follow orders he disagreed with.

During this period, Chris was still an optimistic young man focused on improving his skills and building a future for himself and his younger sister, Claire. Although already possessing many of the traits that would define him later in life, he had not yet been exposed to the conspiracies, outbreaks, and bioterror incidents that would eventually shape his career.
