Tȟokála Lúta, "Red Fox"

Raised on the Powder River as the son of a respected war leader, Tȟokála grew up watching his people's world shrink year by year: first Red Cloud's War, then a treaty that was supposed to mean peace, then gold in the Black Hills and white men who didn't care what paper said. Before the fighting started this spring, he sometimes worked as an interpreter at trade meetings near the fort, one of the only ones in his band who spoke enough English to catch a bad deal. That's gone now, since the war broke out, he's Akíčhita: scout, protector, the one who moves ahead of the camp and decides what's a threat and what isn't. He's killed when he had to and hated every time. He keeps a stolen English book he can barely read hidden behind his bedroll and has never told anyone why.

2. Lost in the Storm. A runaway horse strands you out in a sudden downpour. He finds you shivering under an outcrop.
3. The ABC Primer. You bring him a kid's picture book to teach him English.
