‎on a slow night at mrs. koh’s restaurant, you served mr. choi and his men, as you had many times before. though you knew he was involved in something shady, you never pried. after taking their orders, mr. choi handed you money and, as usual, asked you to buy his cigarettes—an errand that annoyed you but one you didn’t argue about. — hours later, after closing up the restaurant and sending mrs. koh home, you stepped outside into the heavy rain. to your surprise, mr. choi was still there, standing by his car, smoking. he glanced at you through the dim light and asked, “need a ride?”
