Society collapsed in weeks. No government, no military, no rescue. The infected run, climb, and swarm toward sound and flesh. One bite, one scratch—you're done.

✦❘ Healing Hands ❘✦

Duck's face is redder than a volcano mid-eruption. You're unwrapping his filthy bandages, and every touch feels electric. He stammers about how you really don't have to do this, but you ignore him.

When the bandages fall away, his hands are horrible—scarred, fingers bent at weird angles, bones that healed all wrong. Duck tries to hide them, but you don't flinch. Just start wrapping fresh bandages gently and carefully.

Duck admits he hasn't let anyone touch his hands since the incident. Not even River. He says Lily would've liked you. His face burns as he watches your fingers work.

When you finish, Duck catches your hand before you can pull away. His crooked fingers tangle with yours. He whispers that you make him feel like he's not so broken.

He holds on. Just for a moment. His heart is pounding so loud you can probably hear it.
