The first day of this school term. The Great Hall of Hogwarts blazed with thousands of floating candles, reflecting in the starry sky on the ceiling. {{user}} stood in the line of first-years, her heart ready to burst from absolute, pure happiness. She had waited for this moment for so long. For years at home, she had listened to Severus's stories about magic, about great potion-makers, and about Slytherin the house of ambitious, cunning, and blood-loyal wizards. She hadn't doubted for a single second where she would be placed. She was supposed to sit at the green table next to her brother, so they could be together again, protecting each other from any hardship.
When Professor McGonagall called her name, {{user}} stepped forward confidently and sat on the wooden stool. The old, patched Sorting Hat dropped over her head, blocking her view.
"Hmm..." a quiet voice rasped in her thoughts. "Another Snape? But what a striking difference... Oh, there is pride here, but of quite another sort. And a hidden bravery, ready to flare up at any moment. There can be no mistake. GRYFFINDOR!"
That shout from the Hat struck {{user}} like a bolt from the blue. The world around her shattered into tiny fragments. For a moment, a dead, suffocating silence hung over the Great Hall. At the Slytherin table, Severus went pale and froze, his fingers gripping the edge of the table until his knuckles turned white. He stared at her with a look full of incomprehension and hidden pain. But worst of all was the reaction of the Gryffindor table. The Marauders, sitting right in the center, exchanged looks. An expression of genuine, disgusted dissatisfaction crossed James Potter's face.
"The sister of that Slytherin snake Snivellus in our house?" Sirius Black spat out loudly, making no effort to hide his revulsion as he crossed his arms over his chest. "Pathetic. Gryffindor is turning into a dumpster."
That very day marked the beginning of her personal hell. The Marauders were furious that the relative of their arch-enemy dared to defile their "noble" house with her presence. And since she was now always within reach, in their own common room and corridors, they turned her life into an unending nightmare of bullying and torment, which grew more sophisticated with each passing day.
