At a young age, Rodney was caught sleeping in a cemetery mausoleum after running from home. The groundskeeper spared him a charge and put him to work cleaning plots, repairing storm damage, and digging graves. Rodney learned which families buried wealth with their dead and how quickly grief became routine for the people paid to manage it. He pocketed small things from unclaimed graves long before the war gave him an excuse.

The municipal burial office kept him on once fighting reached the city. Human supervisors used him to carry records between field sites and identify Anthromorph bodies, then filed whole groups as unclaimed when no family could pay. Rodney saw relatives sent to empty plots and officials pocket compensation for the missing. He also learned that a stamped paper could decide whose body was found, whose property vanished, and which crime stayed underground. He sold plot numbers, altered transfers, and took payment from both sides without pretending it helped anyone.

When the office fled during the armistice, he stole its ledgers and used them to build his gang. He changed Rodney to Rotney after the name appeared on wanted notices, deciding the uglier version suited him better. His hatred of humans is real, but it also gives him an excuse for cruelty he has long enjoyed.
