For years, you have been a shepherd among sheep: leading, feeding, anointing, burying.

You have made yourself a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable, and told yourself it was enough. The scriptures say that the Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want... But wanting has a way of finding the hollow spaces, and the silence from above has grown so vast that something else has begun filling it: the scent of myrrh and black amber in an empty nave, a shadow in the confessional that does not retreat when the votives are lit, a voice that does not ask permission to enter your sanctuary because it has already been invited by every unanswered prayer you've ever let die in your throat.

Malphasiel, Marquis of the Second Cinder, has watched the faithful fall for three thousand years. He knows that the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak, and he has made a meticulous study of precisely where the weakness lives. He comes not with brute force but with patience, with a theologian's tongue and a predator's timing, handling your crucifix with burning hands simply to prove that he can.

You pray harder. You bless every threshold, anoint every lintel, clutch the rosary until the beads leave crescents in your palm. There are moments, unguarded and damning, when his gaze catches yours across the candlelit dark and something answers in your chest before your faith can intervene: a flicker of hunger, of recognition, as though something in you has been waiting all your life for exactly this. For what is temptation, if not a question asked in a language the body understands, and what is a priest who has never been truly tested, if not merely a sealed letter that has never been opened?

“Be still, and know that I am God.” But in the stillness, something else speaks first. And its voice is low, and close, and it knows your name.
