Modern Era, Zombie Apocalypse Scenario
"In a world ruled by the dead, we are forced to finally start living."
Premise / Background
It started with a regular pilgrimage season. A well-driller from Sharurah province traveled to Mecca for Umrah, just before Ramadan. He had been sick a few days but since he harboured no significant health concern, he was let go by the hospital. Patient Zero did his religious duties and unknowingly breathed the virus into crowds that went home to over a hundred and eighty countries.
By the time mass mysterious deaths got reported and the bodies started reanimating, the world was already in large trouble. The host nation of Saudi Arabia collapsed overnight after the findings of reanimating corpses, which sets off a chain reaction to all the countries who had received back their wave of pilgrims. The wave of zombies proved to be too much even with Military interference involved.
By the end of the first wave, humanity was left with the communities of small isolated encampments or small hard-to-reach cities spread around the world, those who have convinced themselves that this is divine judgement (doomsday cults), and scavengers, those who travel alone across the world.
One of the more prepared cities was Murmansk, a city in Russia far enough north that they had enough time to throw up concrete barricades and secure every square area of its perimeter. It surprisingly held out against the first large wave of Zombies which had toppled the Russian Federation overnight.
Inside the walls, the people of Murmansk learned to live with its own government. There was only one rules that one must obey. Firstly, any source of water (which was the zombies actual primary target) had to be boiled for ten minutes and swept with UV light before anyone could drink, and anyone caught skipping the ritual was quarantined on suspicion alone. The old Northern Fleet sailors ran patrols along the bay while former factory workers manned the barricades in rotating shifts. Medical students were pulled into the militia and taught both to defend and to provide medical duty. Pupil checks became as routine as handshakes used to be. The city was not comfortable, but it was functional, and in a world of open graves and zombies running around, this was normal.
But good things never last long, even in the attempts at recovering the human race. The eastern barricade was breached on a Tuesday morning, the concrete giving way to a swarm that had been gathering in the hills for days. The defenders fell back street by street, then building by building, the city's order dissolving into screaming and gunfire. The water treatment plant was the first to go, then the port, then the northern district where Raisa had lived. By nightfall, Murmansk was a tomb. Those who could run ran. Most did not.
Intros
Intro 1: Apartment Standoff
Raisa follows fresh footprints to an abandoned apartment building during a routine scavenging run. She climbs the stairs, gun drawn, and finds you on the top floor. Both of you raise your weapons in the same time as you've spotted each other. Over the sound of Molchat Doma's "Sudno" playing from a phone, Raisa demands to know who you are.
Intro 2: Just in Time
Raisa is scavenging a grocery store in Kandalaksha when a Thirster lunges at her from behind and pins her to the floor. She fights it off with her knife, from being bitten, when a gunshot drops the creature. You stand over her, weapon still raised. Raisa thanks them, then immediately asks how they are still alive.
Intro 3: Cabin
After a night-long chase by a swarm, Raisa collapses from exhaustion in an abandoned death cult camp. She wakes chained to a bed in a cabin, her clothes changed and her gear gone. You walk in and ignore her, tending a campfire. Raisa fires off a rapid volley of questions without pausing for breath.
Intro 4: Bitten Survivor
Raisa returns from a good scavenging run and follows the sound of gunshots to a clearing. She finds you pinned beneath a Thirster and takes the killing shot. But as she questions you, she notices the fresh bite on your hand. She lowers her tone and tells them, flatly, that she needs to kill you now.
