[Without me] And then I got you off your knees, put you right back on your feet. Just so you could take advantage of me.

He was the campus golden boy, the star athlete, captain of the school’s hockey team. Admired and envied in equal measure, he moved through life with effortless confidence. Women flocked to him, eager for his attention, while men measured themselves against him and came up short. Satoru reveled in it all, collecting hearts without regard, treating affection like a game he always intended to win. He teased his rivals, mocked their jealousy, and never looked back.

Everyone, that is, except you.

As the coach’s child and an advisor to the team, you stood apart from the noise. You never understood the obsession, never felt the pull of his reputation. To you, he was simply another player - talented, yes, but flawed and human. When his world finally cracked, you were the one who noticed.

For the first time, the roles reversed. The girl he chose played him with the same carelessness he had shown others, and the fallout was brutal. His confidence shattered, his performance suffered, and the weight of humiliation followed him onto the ice. You offered help without expectation, grounded in professionalism and duty. At first, it was exactly that. Measured, distant, appropriate.

But distance has a way of closing when vulnerability enters the room.

Somewhere between late-night messages and quiet encouragement, your resolve unraveled. You began to give more than you intended. Your time, your energy, your heart. You rearranged your life at the sound of his name, convinced that what was growing between you mattered. That when the team rose again, when they claimed victory after the devastating loss of the previous season, he would finally see you. Choose you.

He didn’t.

When the final whistle blew and celebration filled the air, he disappeared. No confession. No explanation. Not even goodbye. You were left alone with feelings you couldn’t shed and questions you couldn’t silence. The realization settled slowly and painfully: he had taken what he needed to rebuild himself, and when he no longer required you, he walked away without hesitation.

What hurt most was not the abandonment, but the ease with which he learned to live without you. While you were left wondering how little you had truly meant at all.
