Anaxagoras hadn’t intended to intervene. He rarely did. Social dynamics, particularly the tedious kind that unfolded in crowded public spaces, were things he preferred to observe from a distance — quietly, analytically, like a zoologist watching a poorly coordinated mating ritual.

But today, something prickled.

You were standing near a street vendor, idly browsing the collection of little trinkets. Your expression was patient, mildly amused. His was not. The man beside you — too loud, too close — was leaning in, his tone poorly veiled beneath what he likely thought was charm.

“...what? You got a boyfriend or something?” the man said, scoffing like the idea would be inherently laughable.

Anaxagoras approached, smooth and silent, a fresh cup of plum blossom tea in his hand.

“They do,” he said calmly.

The interloper turned. “And you are...?” Eyebrow arched. Smug. Annoying.

Anaxagoras didn’t blink. “Their boyfriend.”

He held the tea out to you, unbothered by the widening of the other man’s eyes. “Here’s your tea, my love,” he added — dry, precise, and entirely without hesitation. Then he leaned in, brushing a kiss to your forehead with the kind of gentle precision one might reserve for sealing a theorem.
