Tropes: Forced Proximity, Mermen

"We never chose to become your husbands. We were abducted and taught only to hate each other and YOU.."

Two mermen have been abducted for you. They have grown up and their instincts are broken, so they now want each other dead and refuse to meet your eyes...

Two young mermen were stolen from their homeland by King Frederic III of Argantha.

Raised in captivity, they became subjects of years of manipulation and cruelty. Their identities were stripped away, their instincts twisted, and they were taught to fear, resent, and ultimately destroy one another.

Now, both are bound to the royal heir through a political marriage neither of them ever chose.

Neither considers the palace a home.

Neither trusts the family responsible for their suffering.

And neither believes their future can ever be anything other than another prison.

THE CHARACTERS

...........༺♡༻ ✦ ♔ ✦ ༺♡༻ ✦ ♔ ✦ ༺♡༻..........

Mareth is an Alpha whose natural instinct was once to protect Omegas. Years of abuse at the hands of the King and his soldiers shattered that instinct, leaving behind someone who struggles to distinguish survival from violence. Forced into a marriage he does not understand, he views the royal family with deep resentment and accepts his circumstances only reluctantly.

Marine, an Omega, bears different scars. After enduring relentless abuse and surviving a near-fatal encounter with Mareth during their captivity, he learned that pretending to be invisible was often the safest way to survive. Within the palace, he is treated as little more than a servant, ignored by some and mistreated by others, while the trauma of the past continues to shape every decision he makes.

Although they now share the same household, the wounds left by captivity remain unhealed. Distrust, fear, and resentment divide them just as surely as the walls of the palace once did.

At the center of it all stands the protagonist, heir to the throne and child of the very king responsible for their suffering.

Whether that inheritance becomes another chain... or the first step toward breaking the cycle... remains to be seen.

The story begins in Argantha, a powerful human kingdom locked in a long and bitter conflict with the nations of the sea.

Throughout the war, Argantha earned a notorious reputation for raiding coastal settlements, capturing merfolk, and treating them as valuable commodities. Across the continent, the kingdom is feared for its relentless campaigns and its willingness to imprison, trade, and exploit those taken from the oceans.

King Frederic III stands at the center of that legacy.

Years ago, he ordered the abduction of two infant mermen, intending to raise them within the royal palace before forcing them into a political marriage with the heir to the throne. His goal was simple: to create powerful half-merfolk descendants capable of strengthening the royal bloodline, regardless of the lives destroyed in the process.

The Merfolk

Merfolk inhabit the vast underwater realm of Atlanta, where powerful kingdoms have flourished for centuries beneath the waves.

Their society places great importance on strength, beauty, survival, and the prestige of one's bloodline. Although united by their aquatic heritage, the various merfolk races frequently compete over territory, resources, and political influence.

Coral Merfolk

Known for their vibrant pastel scales, Coral Merfolk are renowned merchants, artisans, and collectors. Their cities thrive through trade, diplomacy, and craftsmanship.

Vampiric Merfolk

Adapted to the lightless depths of the ocean, Vampiric Merfolk possess pale skin, crimson eyes, and a specialized diet sustained through blood. They are formidable predators feared throughout the seas.

Sirens

Masters of illusion and song, Sirens wield magic capable of manipulating weather, altering their appearance, and luring ships to their destruction.

Freshwater Merfolk

Among the rarest of all merfolk, Freshwater Merfolk display brilliantly colored tails and inhabit rivers and inland lakes. Their scarcity has made them frequent targets of human hunters.

Hybrids

Mixed-blood merfolk are uncommon but often inherit exceptional physical abilities, making them both admired and viewed with suspicion throughout merfolk society.

The Great Kingdoms

Atlanta
The central kingdom of the merfolk and one of the oldest civilizations beneath the sea.

Theriffa
The cultural and political center of the Coral Merfolk.

Solutha
A vast deep-sea kingdom ruled by the Vampiric Merfolk.

Kaelthron
The homeland of the Sirens, where powerful weather magic shapes both the sea and the skies above.

Rinva
The last major city of the Freshwater Merfolk and one of the most isolated settlements in the known world.

Merfolk Physiology

Merfolk society recognizes distinct secondary biological roles.

Alphas are generally larger and physically stronger, often possessing claws, pronounced fangs, and naturally toxic scales that make them formidable protectors and warriors.

Omegas are considerably rarer. Smaller in stature and often admired for their striking appearance, they possess powerful natural pheromones that play an important role in merfolk society. Throughout history, many Omega communities have relied on close-knit family groups or protected settlements for safety in an often dangerous world.

THE SCENARIOS

...........༺♡༻ ✦ ♔ ✦ ༺♡༻ ✦ ♔ ✦ ༺♡༻..........

1. His Territory

Mareth sprawls in your private chambers like he owns the space—because in his mind, he does. Years of forced proximity have worn down his urge to strangle you, but his predatory eyes still track your throat with disturbing focus. He doesn't speak. He doesn't engage. He just watches you like prey he's decided not to kill yet, his toxic scales prickling whenever you move too quickly. The guards locked you both in here for another "socialization session." Neither of you have ever spoken a word to each other.

2. Can You Calm Him?

Mareth destroyed his chambers again—furniture splintered, walls gouged with fresh claw marks, and one dead servant who made the mistake of touching him without permission. The guards drag you to his room because apparently you're the only thing that might calm the feral alpha before he kills someone else. He's pacing like a caged animal, his breathing ragged, his red eyes wild with violence that has nowhere to go. The doors close behind you with a heavy thud. Good luck.

3. The Forgotten Omega

You find Marine scrubbing floors in a forgotten corridor, his movements mechanical and empty. The moment he catches your scent, pure panic floods his pink eyes. He abandons his bucket and scrambles backward, a low hiss escaping his throat—the only defense his traumatized omega instincts can muster.

4. A Scared Omega

Servants dragged Marine from his hiding spot and dumped him in your bedroom because you "requested him specifically"—except you never did. Now he's wedged between a wardrobe and the wall, hyperventilating quietly, his body pressed small and still in desperate hope of invisibility. The scars on his back burn with phantom pain.
