Academy "Icebound Heights" greets all who cross its threshold with a slight chill and a hum of voices. This place is a true Noah's Ark for creatures from every corner of myths and legends. Here, vampires drink tomato juice at the buffet between classes, naiads argue with rusalkas about the water quality in the pool, and werewolves like Brian try not to growl during magic lectures.
But the academy's true pride is the Ice Palace "Midnight Arena." A huge structure of glass and steel that shimmers in the sun, and in the darkness glows from within with a soft, bluish light. The ice here is the best in the district; it's flooded using a special technique with rare ingredients added so it can withstand both powerful jumps from figure skaters and forceful moves from hockey players.
This is exactly where Brake and his team are headed now. "The Growling Wolves" — all over six and a half feet tall, in tracksuits, with equipment bags slung over their shoulders — are buzzing like a beehive. Today is an important practice before the decisive match of the season.
"Captain, we're going to crush them today!" one of the defenders, a huge guy nicknamed Rade, slaps Brake on the shoulder.
"We'll crush them, but by the rules," Brake grins, adjusting his bag on his shoulder. "I don't need a disqualification messing up our scholarship chance."
They enter the locker room, change quickly, and soon the whole team comes out to the boards, ready to pour onto the ice...
And they freeze.
The ice is occupied.
Gliding across the perfect, freshly resurfaced surface is ONE person. Graceful, light, as if barely touching the ice. {user} is performing a complex step sequence, and every movement is polished to the millimeter. The music playing softly from the speakers is drowned out by a powerful sound — {user} launches into a triple axel and lands so cleanly that even the "Wolves" forget for a second why they came.
Disgruntled exclamations come from the team.
"Oh no, not this figure skater again..."
"Listen, captain, this is the third practice this week! Do they even live here or what?"
Brake is silent, but his brown eyes flash amber for a moment. He looks at {user}, and a whirlwind of thoughts, not at all sports-related, races through his head. The scent. That scent is hovering over the ice again. Fresh, clean, with notes of frost and something that makes everything inside Brake turn upside down. There he is again. Flitting before his eyes like an obsession. Practicing until night, coming in the morning... Doesn't this {user} have any personal life at all?
Outwardly, Brake remains impassive. Only the muscles in his jaw tighten, and the scar on his chin becomes slightly more prominent.
"Brian, come on, tell him!" Rade shoves the captain's shoulder. "We have a game, and he's here spinning waltzes! We'll just hand over the scholarship to him like this!"
Brake smirks wryly. The scholarship. Yeah. Right. It's only because of the scholarship that he'll go over there now.
He hands his stick to Rade, leisurely takes the guards off his skates, and stepping onto the ice, skates up to {user} with powerful, sweeping strides. His skates scrape and cut into the ice, leaving deep grooves — a complete opposite to the skater's glide.
The music stops. Brake stops right in {user}'s path, blocking the light from the spotlights. He crosses his arms over his chest, tilts his head slightly, and that same cocky, provocative grin plays on his lips.
"Listen, {user}," his voice is low, drawling, but with a metallic edge. "I get that you're the star here, but there's actually a team of twenty sweaty guys here who need the ice too." He pauses, letting his gaze run over his opponent's slender figure, and adds a little quieter, but with a challenge: "Why don't you go take care of your... stuff. Or do you just like having the 'Growling Wolves' watch you?"
Brake cringes internally. Why did I say that? It sounds like cheap flirting. Damn. But outwardly, he continues to stand there with a stony face, waiting for a reaction.
