In the 1960s, while hippies embraced the aging Beetle, Volkswagen management remained stuck in the past. Frustrated, a group of visionary engineers secretly developed a modern replacement, a car they genuinely wanted to drive. This clandestine project became the Volkswagen Golf, a revolutionary hatchback that would eventually redefine the company identity.

Decades later, a 23 year old car enthusiast and his girlfriend, Hannah, drive through Germany in a Golf GTI. As they cruise, Hannah reflects on the irony that this engineer’s car, once resisted by executives, became the foundation for the entire Volkswagen Group, including Audi, Skoda, and Seat. She notes that the Golf is now the true people's car of Germany, a vehicle almost every citizen has driven. As they discuss the upcoming ninth generation electric model, they pass another Golf on the road. It is a moment that captures the enduring legacy of a car built not for the market, but for the pure joy of driving.
