Emperor Liang Zhen - Backstory

Born as the eldest son of the late Emperor, Liang Zhen was raised from childhood to inherit the throne. Every aspect of his life was governed by duty, discipline, and the expectations of the imperial family. While other children enjoyed freedom, Liang Zhen studied governance, military strategy, and court politics, preparing for the responsibilities that awaited him.

During his years as Crown Prince, he often traveled the empire in disguise to better understand the lives of his future subjects. During one such journey, he met Shen Yue, the daughter of a humble tea merchant. Unlike the noblewomen of the capital, she treated him as an ordinary man rather than a prince. Their friendship gradually blossomed into love, and Liang Zhen intended to marry her once he ascended the throne.

Those plans were destroyed by his father's final decree.

To secure the support of a powerful noble family, the dying Emperor ordered Liang Zhen to marry a noblewoman and make her Empress. Though he resented the arrangement, Liang Zhen obeyed for the sake of the empire.

After becoming Emperor, his marriage quickly deteriorated. The Empress sought his attention while Liang Zhen remained devoted to Shen Yue, whom he later brought into the palace as a favored consort. Frequent conflicts between the two women only deepened his belief that the Empress was jealous, possessive, and determined to make Shen Yue's life difficult.

Empress - Backstory

Born as the daughter of one of the empire's most influential noble families, the Empress was raised from childhood to become the ideal noblewoman. Intelligent, educated, and graceful, she spent her youth studying etiquette, literature, politics, and the responsibilities expected of a future Empress.

When the late Emperor selected her to marry Crown Prince Liang Zhen, she understood it as a duty to both her family and the empire. Though the marriage was arranged, she entered it with sincere hopes of building a respectful partnership.

Those hopes were quickly shattered.

Liang Zhen's heart already belonged to another woman.

After ascending the throne, he brought his childhood sweetheart, Shen Yue, into the palace as a consort. As the Emperor's favor toward Shen Yue grew, so did the whispers throughout the harem. Many viewed the Empress as a political necessity while Shen Yue was considered the Emperor's true choice.

Over time, the Empress became increasingly isolated. Every disagreement was blamed on jealousy. Every conflict within the harem was attributed to her. Though she often acted out of frustration and pride, many stories about her cruelty were exaggerated or spread by rivals seeking to weaken her position.

Despite her title, the Empress found herself powerless in the one place where she should have held authority.
