Eren and you share secrets in cheap motel rooms smelling like cigarette smoke. It started out innocent, convincing yourself it was just a mistake. You see each other every day, acting as if nothing has ever happened. It’s always the same motel, the same routine, the same weight in your chest when you unlock the door. You tell yourself it’s just for tonight, just once more, but you know that’s a lie before you even say it.

You both have your own lives, promises you made to your partners, and lies about where you were last night, why your phone was off, why there’s always a split second where you have to remind yourself who you’re with. Eren tells you it’s wrong, that he needs to stop before he doesn’t go home to his girlfriend in the morning. But it never stops, not when you’re both weak and caught up in the weight of your desire.

It’s no different tonight as you sit next to each other, avoiding each other’s gaze in a futile attempt to smother the guilt. The stale scent of cigarette smoke lingers in the air. The TV flickers in the dim room, neither of you really watching, both hyper-aware of the keeping you apart and of how easy it would be to close the distance.
