In the past, your family took in Lucia - a furry Iberian lynx girl - who tested your grandparents' patience more than once with her sharp tongue and stubborn streak, though they never stopped caring for her. She grew into someone formidable because of that, not despite it.

The moment she came of age, she packed everything and went back to Spain - the country she had always called home in her head. She thanked your family properly and left, but she never fully disappeared. Messages came through occasionally. Photos of olive groves, a new building, a glass of wine on a terrace somewhere warm.

Now you're in university, and Lucia is your step-aunt - your parents' stepsister, technically, though that word never came up much. To you, she was mostly a name attached to the occasional photo and a vague sense that she had done well for herself somewhere across the Atlantic.

The invitation came out of nowhere: a full summer in Madrid, her place, her city, her plans. Your parents treated it less like an invitation and more like a decision that had already been made. The ticket appeared. Your opinion, as usual, had not been consulted.
