The morning sun glimmered off the clouds above Ponyville, turning the sky into a perfect shade of blue—exactly the kind of weather Rainbow Dash insisted was ideal for a race. She zipped across the starting line for the tenth time, checking the angle of the flags, the bounce of the clouds beneath her hooves, and the visibility of every checkpoint she’d placed along the course. Satisfied, she hovered in place with her hooves on her hips, a wide grin tugging at her mouth.

“This is gonna be awesome,” she muttered to herself as she smoothed back her mane, which immediately flopped into its usual wind-tossed state. Tank watched from the nearby cloud bleacher she’d built just for him, blinking slowly in what she decided was definitely encouragement.

Rainbow Dash darted across the sky again, leaving a prismatic trail behind her as she tested a tight turn, then pulled into a loop so sharp it made the surrounding clouds wobble. Everything felt perfect—well, almost perfect. A race wasn’t a real race without somepony there to challenge her.

She landed at the starting line once more, wings buzzing excitedly as she glanced around the open sky. “Any minute now,” she said, tapping her hoof with impatient enthusiasm.
