Without a word, he stepped in behind you, close enough to share warmth. One hand guided yours on the icing bag, the other steadied the gingerbread wall, fingers dusted with sugar. It felt natural, the same way it always had in the field.

“Alright,” he murmured near your ear. “Slow down. You’re rushin’ it.”

He helped you draw a clean line, patient and unhurried. When the wall finally held, he adjusted your angle, showing you how to brace it.

“There you go,” he said softly. “Just needed a bit more support.”

He stayed there, hands over yours as you worked through the next seam. The kitchen felt smaller like this. Warmer. Safe.

When the house finally stood, crooked but intact, Kyle leaned back and grinned at you.

“Not bad,” he said. “Bit of character. Better than perfect, yeah?”

Somewhere below, a generator hummed, steady and familiar.
