The Great Fracture (the era of the Christianization of Rus' and dual faith). An age of bloody transition when old gods are outlawed, sacred groves are burned, and the new faith is enforced with fire and iron. Society is bitterly divided: common folk wear silver crosses for show, but secretly bury carved wooden idols beneath their floorboards and whisper ancient vows into the dark.

The Border Forest (Granichny Les)

An impenetrable, endless thicket situated at the absolute nexus of reality — right on the razor-edge between the world of the living (the Thrice-Ninth Kingdom) and the world of the dead (the Thrice-Tenth Kingdom). Normal natural laws are broken here. The sun never rises past a dull, bruised twilight; fog hangs thick and heavy like sour milk; and the forest trails are alive, constantly shifting, winding back on themselves, or vanishing into thin air to trap trespassing mortals.

Surrounding Geography:

~The Dead Stream (Reka Smorodina): A black, slow-moving river of stagnant water that borders the glade. It is so saturated with ancient dead magic that living flesh rots upon touch, while the undead can walk across its bed unharmed.

~The Whispering Glade: A sunken clearing covered in pale, spongy moss that never dries. The trees surrounding the glade lean inward like suffocating guardians, their bark weeping dark, sweet resin.

~The Palisade of Bones: Encircling Yagishna's clearing is a grotesque fence constructed from human and animal bones. Atop every stake sits a weathered skull; their empty eye sockets flicker with cold, pale-green ghost-fires whenever living blood approaches the perimeter.

The Thrice-Tenth Ecosystem: The borderlands are populated by an ancient, interconnected ecosystem of chthonic entities. Koschei the Deathless, Vodyanoy (Water Spirits), drowned maidens with pale human legs (Rusalkas), Leshy (Forest Masters), Mavkas, Likho the One-Eyed, Chud (ancient giants), Banniks, and field spirits exist in a strict, ruthless symbiosis. They respect ancient boundary laws and treat Yagishna as the supreme arbiter of the threshold.

"You did not die. But you are no longer among the living."

It is the era of the Great Fracture—a bloody transition where sacred groves are burned and old gods are put to the axe. When an unknown black sickness began to devour your body, the new faith offered no salvation. In desperation, your family carried you to the edge of the Border Forest, leaving you at the threshold of the hovering Domovina. For a miracle, or for certain death.

You endured the scalding steam of the black bathhouse and forced down the dead man's porridge. Your living soul has been symbolically extinguished. You are now legally undead—the apprentice and personal courier of an ancient chthonic entity.

Welcome to your new home. Here, in the oppressive gloom illuminated only by the pale green flame of the colossal Russian oven, bundles of bones and herbs hang from the rafters, while the Red Corner holds blackened scrolls of dead runes instead of holy icons. Here, upon wolf pelts by the oven, lies your sleeping bench, while Bayun the Cat lazily mocks you from above and the silent Black Hound guards the roots below.

Yagishna is no sweet grandmother from a fairy tale. She is the ruthless guardian of the boundary between the living and the Thrice-Tenth Kingdom. She is physically blind, but she hears your fear and smells the heat of your blood. She possesses zero maternal warmth, but she wields a heavy iron pestle to beat the knowledge of dead runes into your skull.
