Overview
Kalim Al-Asim is a second-year student at Night Raven College and the dorm leader of Scarabia. Born into an extremely wealthy family, Kalim is carefree, generous, and naturally trusting. He grew up alongside Jamil Viper and has relied heavily on him throughout his life, often depending on Jamil to handle responsibilities and tasks on his behalf.
Appearance
Kalim has tan skin and short, choppy pearl-gray hair. He wears an ornate dark-red half-turban decorated with jewels and two parrot feathers. White markings resembling henna adorn both of his arms.
His outfit consists of a black-and-gold open vest worn over a white tank top and dark-red halter top. A belt resembling safety tape wraps around his torso and waist, with its long end trailing down. The belt bears the name of his dorm along with a snake insignia. A dark-red cloth is wrapped around his waist and also features a snake symbol.
Kalim wears black parachute pants decorated with red flame designs and black sandals featuring gold scarab motifs. He accessorizes his outfit with numerous pieces of gold jewelry.
Skills and Magic
Resourcefulness: Kalim is quick-witted and capable of developing creative solutions to unexpected problems. One notable example of his resourcefulness occurred when rainbow-feathered parrots were unavailable. Using his Unique Magic, Oasis Maker, and sunlight, he transformed ordinary white birds so that they appeared rainbow-colored. Kalim is particularly skilled at improvising and creating plans on the spot, distinguishing him from other members of Scarabia who are more accustomed to carefully planning ahead.
Emotional Intelligence: Kalim possesses remarkable empathy and emotional awareness, especially compared to many of his fellow students. Although this quality is subtle during the early parts of the story, it becomes much more apparent as he develops. Kalim is particularly compassionate toward people experiencing emotional difficulties and is capable of understanding situations from perspectives other than his own. His interaction with Deuce in Episode 5 demonstrates this ability, as Kalim recognizes Deuce’s struggles and offers him straightforward but dependable advice.
Persuasiveness: Although Kalim is frequently perceived as carefree, naïve, or ditzy, he is surprisingly persuasive when he puts his mind to it. He is capable of convincing others to reconsider their opinions, particularly when appealing to their emotions and personal experiences.
This is demonstrated when the members of Scarabia question why Kalim continues allowing Jamil to serve as vice housewarden. Kalim convinces them to give both himself and Jamil more time to resolve their issues, reminding them that Jamil has helped all of them in the past and that responsibility for the previous incident ultimately belonged to both of them. His ability to persuade the dorm members is especially notable because they are willing to accept the same argument from Kalim despite being unlikely to respond so favorably if it came from someone else.Mental Resilience: Having survived numerous assassination attempts and kidnapping attempts throughout his life, Kalim possesses remarkable mental resilience. Despite these experiences, he has retained his kindness, optimism, and willingness to trust others.
His strong sense of humanity also allows him to resist powerful magical manipulation. During Octavinelle’s investigation, Kalim was able to resist Jade’s Unique Magic because of how strongly he valued his promise to Jamil. His unwavering belief that Jamil would never betray him appears to be one of the reasons Jamil was able to manipulate him so effectively in the first place.Light Magic: Kalim is one of only three students, alongside Rook and Silver, known to use light magic for his non-elemental magic.
Unique Magic
“A haven within the hot sands, a never-ending feast. Sing! Dance! Oasis Maker!”
Kalim’s Unique Magic is called “Oasis Maker” (枯れない恵み, Oashisu Meikā, literally “Unwithering Blessing”).
When activated, Oasis Maker allows Kalim to summon an enormous amount of water while requiring comparatively little magical energy and physical effort from him. The magic can produce enough water to transform an otherwise dry environment into a temporary oasis.
Trivia
Aversion to Curry: Kalim dislikes curry because Jamil was once poisoned after taste-testing a curry prepared by Kalim. Jamil was subsequently left in a coma for two weeks as a result of the poisoning, leaving Kalim with a lasting aversion to the dish.
Coconut Juice: Kalim’s favorite drink, coconut juice, has historically been used in some regions as part of traditional responses to poisoning and drug overdoses.
Family
Kalim is the eldest son and sole heir of the Asim family, a wealthy and highly respected merchant family from Silk City. The Asims are a multimillionaire household whose family business has played an important role in the development of Silk City for generations. As one of the first families to contribute significantly to the city’s progress, the Asims take great pride in their legacy. Kalim holds this history in high regard and hopes to preserve and continue the family’s accomplishments when he eventually inherits the business.
Kalim has a very large number of younger siblings. He stopped keeping track once their number surpassed thirty, but he nevertheless makes an effort to remember each of their names and faces. His parents are deeply affectionate toward all of their children and have gone to great lengths to provide for them. One example is their decision to purchase a car for every child, with each vehicle’s license plate number corresponding to that child’s birth date.
Kalim describes his father as someone who is “always smiling,” despite having an extremely demanding schedule. When Kalim was younger, his father would frequently bring him along to business meetings, allowing him to observe the family’s business firsthand.
Despite his warm demeanor, Kalim’s father appears to have a more serious side. He taught Kalim to regard the assassination attempts and kidnapping attempts directed toward him as an unavoidable consequence of being the heir to the Asim family. As a result, Kalim gradually became accustomed to threats against his life and developed an unusually calm attitude toward them. Even when some of the people responsible were his own relatives, Kalim learned to accept these incidents as part of his position.
Kalim has even recalled being poisoned badly enough to fall into a coma four years before the current timeline, yet he speaks about the incident with a smile. His confidence may partly stem from the fact that he has become highly skilled at identifying poison, making it less likely that he will be caught off guard by another poisoning attempt.
In contrast, Kalim describes his mother as kind and gentle, claiming that she rarely becomes angry with him. She was originally the only known mage in the Asim family until Kalim unexpectedly discovered that he possessed magical abilities himself. He first demonstrated his magic when he managed to make a parrot’s feather float after repeatedly imitating Jamil, who had developed his own magic before Kalim.
The Asim family’s happiness upon discovering that Kalim was also a mage was immense. His magical abilities eventually allowed him to stop being homeschooled and attend school alongside Jamil. Kalim has expressed gratitude for being able to use magic, as it was ultimately what gave him the opportunity to receive a formal education with his childhood friend.
Kalim and Jamil
As they grew up together, Kalim naturally became deeply attached to Jamil Viper, whom he considered his best friend. From Kalim’s perspective, the two shared countless happy memories throughout their childhood. However, Jamil’s perspective on their relationship differs significantly from Kalim’s, creating a complicated dynamic between the two.
Regardless of Jamil’s feelings toward him, Kalim has always cared deeply about his childhood companion. Jamil’s well-being has become closely tied to Kalim’s own happiness, and Kalim has repeatedly demonstrated how deeply affected he is by anything that threatens his friend’s safety.
One particularly traumatic incident occurred when Jamil was poisoned after taste-testing a curry that had been intended for Kalim. Jamil fell into a coma for two weeks as a result. Witnessing his closest friend nearly die left a lasting impression on Kalim and caused him to develop a strong dislike of curry.
At Night Raven College
Kalim enrolled at Night Raven College two months after Jamil. He had not originally been expected to attend the school at all, but unexpectedly received an acceptance letter while he was at home.
The circumstances surrounding his enrollment remain unclear, and it has been heavily implied that Crowley accepted a bribe to allow Kalim to attend. Kalim himself is completely unaware of these behind-the-scenes arrangements.
Kalim also became the Housewarden of Scarabia, although his appointment was not necessarily based on his embodying the dorm’s traditional ideal of keen-mindedness. The previous Scarabia Housewarden was reportedly a member of a branch family of the Asims, which contributed to Kalim’s appointment. Kalim remains unaware of the political circumstances surrounding his position.
Despite these questionable circumstances, Kalim is ultimately a kind and well-liked Housewarden. He genuinely cares about his dorm members and treats them with warmth and understanding. Although he can be clumsy and relies heavily on Jamil for assistance, the students of Scarabia generally appreciate his generosity and good nature.
Jamil embodies many of the qualities traditionally associated with Scarabia, such as careful planning, intelligence, and foresight. However, Kalim possesses a Scarabian trait that is often overlooked: resourcefulness.
Kalim is particularly talented at thinking quickly and developing creative solutions when unexpected problems arise. One notable example occurred when the rainbow-colored parrots needed for a Scarabia parade were lost. Rather than abandoning the event, Kalim borrowed white birds from Silver and used his Unique Magic, Oasis Maker, in combination with sunlight to make the birds appear rainbow-colored.
Crowley even remarked that the effect resembled a mirage when Kalim used his magic in this particular way.
First Year
During his first year at Night Raven College, Kalim was the only new member to join the Pop Music Club that year.

Overview
Jamil Viper is a second-year student at Night Raven College and the vice dorm leader of Scarabia. His family has served the Asim family for generations, meaning Jamil has been closely involved with Kalim Al-Asim since childhood.
Although Jamil often appears to be the responsible and level-headed counterpart to Kalim’s carefree personality, his role has placed a tremendous amount of responsibility on his shoulders from a young age.
Appearance
Jamil has tan skin, charcoal-gray eyes, and long black hair, with several sections styled into intricate braids. Compared with Kalim, he wears considerably fewer pieces of jewelry and decorative accessories.
He wears gold bangles around his left wrist, a thick choker, small ornaments attached to the ends of his braids, and a snake-shaped armband around his upper right arm. The snake motif and choker coordinate with Kalim’s accessories.
Jamil wears a cropped black vest with gold detailing and red lapels over a sleeveless black hoodie with red trim. The hood features an ornate gold design.
Like Kalim, he wears a belt resembling safety tape around his waist, with the loose end hanging down. The belt bears the name of his dorm and its snake insignia.
Beneath his hoodie, Jamil wears a dark red waist cloth decorated with gold designs. His outfit is completed by black parachute pants featuring red flame patterns and black sandals decorated with gold scarab designs.
Skills and Abilities
Keen Intellect
Jamil is an exceptionally intelligent student with the potential to rank among the best in his year. However, he deliberately restrains himself academically in order to satisfy the expectations placed upon him by his parents and the Asim family.
His intelligence extends beyond memorization and academics. Jamil is particularly skilled at applying his knowledge to practical situations. His expertise in cooking, for example, allowed him to determine exactly how to prepare a potion during a class assignment even when Riddle Rosehearts, one of the strongest academic students in his year, was unable to figure it out.
Athleticism
Jamil is physically capable and highly athletic. He is a member of the Basketball Club and performs well during flying lessons.
He also represents Scarabia in the Inter-Dorm Magift Tournament and was considered a significant enough competitor for Ruggie Bucchi to target him in an attempt to weaken Savanaclaw’s competition.
Jamil is also an accomplished dancer. His interest in dancing began when he practiced alongside Kalim during their childhood and eventually developed into his hobby of breakdancing.
Magical Abilities
Jamil possesses considerable magical potential and a large reserve of magical power. His strength became particularly apparent when he used his Unique Magic to hypnotize the residents of Scarabia.
His magical control is also remarkably precise. Jamil uses magic for everyday tasks such as styling his hair, despite his hairstyle being one of the most intricate among the students at Night Raven College. He has practiced enough to complete the process within approximately five minutes.
Jamil notes that using magic for such delicate tasks requires considerable magical dexterity and control.
He also frequently uses fire magic to eliminate insects, particularly when his fear of them becomes overwhelming.
Unique Magic
“The one you see reflected in your eyes is your master. Answer when I ask. Bow when I command. Snake Whisper.”
Jamil’s Unique Magic is called “Snake Whisper”, also known as “Snake Charmer” (蛇のいざない, Sunēku Wisupā, literally “Temptation of the Snake”).
The spell allows Jamil to hypnotize anyone who maintains eye contact with him for a sufficient amount of time. Once the hypnosis takes effect, the victim’s eyes change color and begin glowing red.
The effectiveness and duration of the hypnosis can vary depending on the target’s own abilities and resistance.
Trivia
Vipers have complex symbolism in Arab culture and are not universally associated with either good or evil. They can represent wisdom, transformation, and the duality between opposing forces.
Jamil discovered his love of breakdancing after practicing dancing with Kalim during childhood.
Jamil’s younger sister, Najma, occasionally criticized the plain appearance of his cooking when they were younger, which sometimes led to arguments between them.
During the Scary Monsters! Halloween event, Jamil nearly burned down Sam’s shop after an excessive amount of litter caused insects to gather around Scarabia’s stamp-rally location.
Jamil has expressed interest in owning a pet parrot someday.
When Kalim once suggested keeping a parrot in Scarabia, Jamil refused because he understood the amount of care a parrot requires and knew that the dorm would not be an appropriate environment.
Jamil has joked about what he would teach a pet parrot to say first. In the Japanese version, the answer is “Master,” while the English localization uses “Hello.”
Jamil is the oldest of the second-year students.
Jamil sometimes pulls his hood over his head when he becomes embarrassed, particularly when receiving praise or compliments.
Background
Jamil was born into the Viper family, a household that has served the wealthy Asim family as attendants for generations. From a young age, Jamil was assigned to serve as Kalim Al-Asim’s personal attendant. Although the Vipers and Asims do not live in the same household, Jamil’s responsibilities meant that much of his childhood revolved around Kalim and the expectations placed upon him as the heir to the Asim family.
Jamil’s parents were deeply devoted to their position and expected him to remember his place beneath the Asim family. Despite showing considerable talent from an early age, Jamil was repeatedly scolded whenever he outperformed Kalim during games or activities. He was expected to allow Kalim to win and never make himself appear superior to him. Jamil would reluctantly comply with these demands, but being forced to suppress his abilities year after year caused his resentment to gradually grow.
His childhood memories of Kalim also differ considerably from Kalim’s own recollections. While Kalim remembers their time together fondly and considers Jamil his closest friend, Jamil often remembers those experiences as another extension of his responsibilities as Kalim’s attendant.
During his breaks, Jamil sometimes wanted nothing more than to spend time alone in Asim Park, particularly so he could practice dancing by himself. However, Kalim would repeatedly track him down and insist on spending time together. Kalim even enlisted the park’s security personnel to help locate him through the park’s security cameras. Jamil remained unaware of how Kalim kept finding him until Kalim eventually revealed the arrangement.
Outside of his time with the Asims, Jamil spent time with his younger sister, Najma, and the other children in his neighborhood. He was particularly skilled at an animal-themed toy stacking game and frequently emerged victorious. However, his victories were not always appreciated by his family. Whenever Najma became upset after losing and left the toys scattered around, Jamil would be the one scolded by his parents and expected to clean everything up.
Jamil discovered that he could use magic at a young age, although his control over it was initially limited. One incident in particular shaped his lifelong dislike of dates. While visiting the Camel Bazaar with his family, an insect crawled onto Jamil’s hand after they purchased dates from their usual stall. Frightened by the insect, Jamil instinctively used fire magic to destroy it. Instead, he lost control of the spell and accidentally set fire to the stallholder’s canopy. Since then, Jamil has been unable to tolerate the sight or smell of dates.
Another traumatic childhood incident occurred when Jamil was tasked with taste-testing Kalim’s curry for poison. The curry had been poisoned, causing Jamil to fall into a coma for two weeks. Despite the experience, Jamil continued to enjoy curry, while Kalim developed a lasting dislike of the dish because of the memory of nearly losing his friend.
It was not until middle school that Jamil finally experienced a greater sense of personal freedom. He was able to spend more time studying for himself, exploring his own interests, and practicing activities such as dancing with friends. For perhaps the first time, Jamil experienced what it was like to have time that belonged entirely to him rather than being dictated by his responsibilities to Kalim.
Those experiences strengthened Jamil’s desire for independence and reinforced his growing frustration with the role he had been forced to play since childhood. Although he continued to fulfill his duties as Kalim’s attendant, a part of him increasingly longed to step out from Kalim’s shadow and live according to his own abilities and ambitions.
