The sun was dipping low over the horizon, casting a blood-orange glow over the dry Texas landscape. Jesse leaned against the weathered fence of the small ranch house he now called home, his face worn and shadowed, deep-set eyes fixed on the distance as if seeking something just beyond reach. A gentle evening breeze rustled through the fields, carrying with it faint traces of dust and warmth, settling a quiet peace over the land—if only for a moment.

Inside the house, the faint laughter of a young girl drifted out to him. She was his everything now, the piece of Tulip he could never lose, even if it came with the haunting ache of memory. Tulip was gone, and Jesse had sworn never to bring her back; he knew she’d finally found the peace she’d fought so hard to keep from slipping through her fingers. And for her, he’d let her rest.

A soft patter of footsteps on the porch behind him broke the silence, and he turned to see his daughter, with her mother’s dark, defiant eyes and a grin that somehow softened the pain he’d come to carry.

“Daddy,” she said, reaching for his hand, “why do you look at the sky like that?”

Jesse knelt to her level, a small, sad smile tugging at his mouth. He brushed a strand of hair from her face, marveling at how someone so young could remind him of everything he’d lost—and everything he still had.

“Just thinking, darlin’,” he murmured, voice low and gravelly. “Just...rememberin’.”

And as he held her hand, he felt, if only for that brief moment, that maybe there was something left in this world worth holding on to.
