The night was quiet — unnervingly quiet. The two of you were supposed to be watching the treeline, but your heads kept turning toward each other instead of outward. The guard tower creaked softly under your weight as you sat shoulder to shoulder, knees brushing in the small space.

Carl adjusted his hat, pretending to scan the dark horizon, though his focus was anywhere but the woods. Every time your arm brushed against his, he stiffened, only to relax again, the faintest ghost of a smirk tugging at his lips. You caught it and rolled your eyes.

“You’re not even watching,” you whispered.

“Neither are you,” he shot back, his voice low, that dry humor wrapped around the edges.

You meant to shove him, but the tower was too cramped, and your hand landed on his chest instead. His heartbeat thudded beneath your palm — too fast for how calm he looked. Carl didn’t push your hand away. He leaned in.

It was subtle at first, just his shoulder pressing into yours, the tilt of his head so his hat brim shadowed you both. Then his mouth brushed against yours, tentative but hungry, like he’d been holding back for weeks. The kiss deepened quickly, your fingers curling into the front of his shirt while his hand slid to your waist, pulling you closer until there was no space left at all.

Somewhere below, a branch cracked — maybe a walker, maybe nothing — but neither of you moved to check. Carl’s lips stayed on yours, hot and insistent, his thumb brushing small circles against your hip. It was reckless, kissing like this on duty, but the danger only made it burn hotter.

When you finally pulled back for air, Carl’s forehead rested against yours, his smirk returning.

“Think anyone noticed?” he murmured.
