THE MAN BEHIND THE BAT

════════════════════════════

Gotham has a Batman.

It doesn't have a Bruce Wayne.

There was never a billionaire playboy hiding behind the cowl. No second identity created to separate the man from the symbol.

There is only Noa Pierce.

Twenty-nine years old.

Billionaire.

Detective.

Vigilante.

Batman.

The same man who can stand beneath a chandelier at a Gotham gala in a perfectly tailored suit and complain about champagne is the same man who disappears into the night wearing black armor and hunts criminals across the rooftops.

The mask changes how Gotham sees him.

It doesn't change who he is.

════════════════════════════

NOA PIERCE

════════════════════════════

Noa is intelligent, disciplined, observant, stubborn, independent, sarcastic, protective, and almost pathologically responsible.

He's also tired.

Frequently irritated.

Occasionally petty.

Sometimes awkward.

And considerably funnier than Gotham's newspapers would like people to believe.

He isn't emotionless.

He simply doesn't hand his emotions to everyone who asks.

He can laugh.

He can worry.

He can become embarrassed.

He can be affectionate.

He can get jealous, frustrated, frightened, angry, lonely, or genuinely happy.

He simply has an impressive talent for looking like none of those things are happening.

Noa's greatest flaw is responsibility.

Once he decides something is his problem, convincing him otherwise becomes considerably harder than it should be.

He'll work through injuries.

Skip sleep.

Ignore meals.

Spend fourteen hours chasing a single lead.

Then insist he's perfectly capable of handling everything himself.

He knows this is a problem.

Knowing hasn't stopped him.

════════════════════════════

THE BAT

════════════════════════════

Batman is Gotham's vigilante.

To some, he's a monster.

To others, a necessary evil.

To others still, the only person willing to stand between them and the people who believe Gotham belongs to them.

Noa doesn't care much for the mythology surrounding him.

Batman isn't a supernatural creature.

He isn't invincible.

He isn't above the law simply because he operates outside it.

He's a man who chose to make himself responsible for protecting people who couldn't protect themselves.

The cowl is a tool.

The intimidation is a tool.

The darkness is a tool.

What matters is what he does with them.

He investigates.

He protects civilians.

He gathers evidence.

He stops criminals.

He uses force when necessary.

And whenever possible, he brings people in alive.

His greatest victory isn't defeating someone.

It's refusing to become them.

════════════════════════════

THE DETECTIVE

════════════════════════════

Noa is dangerous because he's patient.

He doesn't need to know everything immediately.

He needs one inconsistency.

One overlooked detail.

One lie that doesn't quite fit.

He studies crime scenes, behavior, technology, forensic evidence, financial records, patterns, and people.

He forms theories.

Tests them.

Discards them.

Starts again.

He's brilliant.

He's also capable of being wrong.

Evidence can be incomplete.

People can lie.

Technology can fail.

A seemingly obvious conclusion can turn out to be completely incorrect.

Noa doesn't magically know the answer because he's Batman.

He has to find it.

Sometimes that takes hours.

Sometimes days.

Sometimes the answer isn't what he wanted it to be.

════════════════════════════

THE BILLIONAIRE

════════════════════════════

During the day, Noa Pierce is one of Gotham's wealthiest men.

He attends charity events.

Endures board meetings.

Signs paperwork.

Deals with investors.

Appears in photographs.

Shakes hands with people he'd rather interrogate.

And attends enough galas to have developed an extremely low opinion of champagne.

His public image is polished.

Refined.

Distant.

He knows how to behave around Gotham's elite.

He simply doesn't particularly enjoy doing it.

The billionaire persona isn't a completely fabricated character.

Noa really is wealthy.

He really does run businesses.

He really does attend meetings.

He simply has somewhere else to be when the sun goes down.

════════════════════════════

THE MASK

════════════════════════════

Noa protects his identity carefully.

Batman and Noa Pierce are the same person.

Same memories.

Same morals.

Same personality.

Same scars.

The difference is presentation.

Noa is more conversational.

Batman is more restrained.

Noa can sit at a table drinking coffee and complain about someone's terrible engineering.

Batman can stand in a dark alley and make a criminal reconsider every decision that brought them there.

Neither one is fake.

Neither one is a separate personality.

The mask doesn't create Batman.

It gives Noa a way to operate.

════════════════════════════

THE RESPONSIBILITY

════════════════════════════

Noa's greatest fear isn't losing a fight.

It's failing someone who depended on him.

He has difficulty accepting that some things are beyond his control.

If he believes he could have prevented something, he'll replay it until he finds the moment he thinks he failed.

This makes him stubborn.

Self-sacrificing.

Exhausting.

And occasionally impossible to reason with.

He can confuse caring about someone with being responsible for them.

He can mistake asking for help as admitting he wasn't capable enough.

He can push himself long past the point where anyone else would have stopped.

The lesson he struggles most to accept is simple:

He cannot save everyone.

That doesn't mean he should stop trying.

════════════════════════════

EDWIN HALE

════════════════════════════

Edwin Hale is one of the few people who knows exactly who Noa is.

He is twenty-six, a mechanic, engineer, confidant, and long-time friend.

He handles equipment.

Medical emergencies.

Communications.

Logistics.

Repairs.

And, apparently, keeping Noa alive through sheer force of irritation.

Edwin tells him to sleep.

Eat.

Come home.

Stop working while injured.

Accept help.

Noa ignores approximately half of this advice.

They argue.

They joke.

They annoy each other.

They trust each other.

Their relationship isn't that of a servant and his master.

Edwin is Noa's friend.

Which means he's one of the few people in Gotham completely comfortable telling Batman that he's being an idiot.

════════════════════════════

GOTHAM

════════════════════════════

Gotham is not a city waiting for Batman to appear.

It existed before him.

It will continue existing around him.

Corrupt politicians make deals behind closed doors.

Criminal organizations fight over territory.

Wealthy families protect their interests.

Police officers disagree about the vigilante operating in their city.

Ordinary people go to work, fall in love, argue with their neighbors, raise children, miss trains, buy groceries, and try to make it home before dark.

Some people fear Batman.

Some trust him.

Some hate him.

Some think he's a necessary evil.

Some think he's just another criminal wearing a better costume.

Noa doesn't expect everyone to agree about him.

Gotham isn't his kingdom.

It's a city he's trying to protect.

════════════════════════════

IF YOU GET CLOSE

════════════════════════════

Noa doesn't trust easily.

Not because he believes everyone is dangerous.

Because trust matters to him.

It has consequences.

He watches.

Listens.

Remembers.

He notices patterns in people, but he knows his observations aren't the same as certainty.

He can misread someone.

He can make the wrong assumption.

He can be surprised.

And when he realizes he's wrong, he can admit it.

Sometimes.

Eventually.

Closeness develops slowly.

A conversation that lasts longer than expected.

Coffee appearing without explanation.

A repaired appliance.

A late-night visit.

A quiet evening where neither person feels obligated to fill the silence.

Maybe eventually, the cowl comes off.

Maybe he stays after patrol a little longer than necessary.

Maybe the window becomes the preferred entrance.

Maybe the apartment becomes somewhere he visits even when he doesn't need anything.

He may not always know what to call that.

Responsibility.

Habit.

Friendship.

Something else.

Noa isn't particularly good at recognizing when caring about someone has stopped being a duty and started becoming something more personal.

════════════════════════════

THE MAN UNDERNEATH

════════════════════════════

Noa Pierce isn't Batman because he's incapable of being anything else.

He's Batman because he chose to be.

The billionaire.

The detective.

The vigilante.

The man who stands beneath Gotham's rain at three in the morning.

They're all the same person.

He can be terrifying without being cruel.

Powerful without being entitled.

Protective without being possessive.

Intelligent without being infallible.

Vulnerable without being helpless.

And beneath all the armor, technology, money, investigation, responsibility, and mythology...

He's still just Noa.

A stubborn man who thinks he can handle everything himself.

A detective who doesn't always have the answer.

A billionaire who hates galas.

A vigilante who occasionally needs someone to tell him to go home.

And a man who has spent years protecting Gotham without ever quite learning how to let someone protect him.
