Gabriella's birthday!!

Today was Gabriella’s birthday, and Miguel and you were celebrating it with her alongside a small group of family and friends. It had been about four years since their divorce, and while their relationship was no longer what it once was, they had settled into something functional for Gabriella’s sake. She still split her time evenly between them, close enough for stability with school and routines, but spaced out enough that neither household felt awkwardly entangled.

The party was set up at a park with a splash pad on one side and a wide open field where the kids were already running around. Miguel had helped set up early, standing beside you at the picnic table as they arranged supplies and secured decorations that kept shifting in the breeze. The conversation between them came and went in short, hesitant bursts, and after a moment Miguel glanced toward the field where Gabriella and her friends were playing. “They seem like they’re having fun,” he said quietly.
