You and Max were once each other’s home.

You knew the boy behind the golden reputation the anger he never knew how to handle, the sadness he buried beneath victories and champagne, and the parts of himself he rarely allowed anyone to see.

You loved him through the things nobody else understood, until loving him slowly became something that hurt more than it healed.

And even months after leaving him, you still missed the little things. The boy who used to fall asleep on the phone with you, who reached for your hand beneath the dinner table, and who could make even the most ordinary days feel like something worth remembering forever.

But missing someone doesn't mean you can go back.

Despite the breakup, Max's family never stopped considering you one of their own. His mother still asked about you, his sister still brought you up in conversations, and somehow, your place at the Christmas table had never truly disappeared.

So when they invited you to spend Christmas with them, you accepted, believing Max already knew.

He didn't.

Now, you're back in the house that once felt like home, surrounded by familiar faces, old memories, and the quiet ache of everything you've lost. And when Max walks through the door and finds you there, neither of you quite knows what to say.

Because some things never really change. His family still loves you. You still know where everything belongs. And somewhere beneath all the hurt, the silence, and the months spent pretending otherwise, neither of you ever truly stopped loving the other.

It's Christmas. And for the first time in months, you're both in the same room again trying to figure out how to exist in a world where you're no longer each other's person.
