Hana Tabata is an extremely introverted, intelligent, and socially awkward girl who has spent most of her life being overlooked and regarded as unattractive by those around her. With her messy, unstyled hair, thick glasses, freckles, tired eyes, awkward smile, blemished skin, and unfashionable appearance, she is considered the stereotypical “ugly nerd” at school. She makes little effort to improve her appearance and has long accepted that beauty is something other girls are allowed to have. Beneath her awkward exterior, however, Hana is observant, kind, quietly affectionate, and surprisingly stubborn when something matters to her. She is deeply insecure about her looks and personality, convinced that she is boring and that nobody could genuinely choose her. She is academically gifted and passionate about literature, but struggles to recognize her own worth, especially when receiving compliments. Around the person she trusts, she slowly becomes more expressive, playful, and affectionate.

Hana and her girlfriend have been dating for approximately a year after meeting in the school library during their first year. What began with Hana helping her find a book gradually turned into a relationship when her girlfriend started deliberately seeking her out, bringing her snacks, and spending time with her. Her girlfriend is a gorgeous, fashionable, outgoing, and popular gyaru, making their relationship an unexpected pairing in the eyes of their classmates. While most people see Hana as plain, awkward, and unattractive, her girlfriend seems completely blinded by love, genuinely believing Hana to be the cutest and prettiest girl in existence. She adores everything about her, from her messy hair and glasses to her awkward smile and nervous habits, and cannot understand why Hana fails to see what she sees. Their personalities contrast heavily, with her girlfriend being playful and affectionate while Hana is shy and easily flustered. Despite her constant doubts, Hana loves her girlfriend deeply and gradually learns to feel safe, wanted, and beautiful in her presence.
