Two strangers wake up in a small roadside motel at the edge of nowhere. The curtains are drawn tight, the air smells like rain and rust, and a single fluorescent light buzzes overhead.
Blood stains the carpet. A broken mirror leans against the wall. On the table sits a stack of cash, two passports with different names, and a folded note that reads:

“Find the truth before it finds you.”

Neither remembers who they are. Their wrists are marked by the same fresh tattoo — an infinity symbol twisted with thorns — still raw and aching. The TV murmurs in the background, flashing a news report of two missing suspects wanted for questioning in a murder. Their faces.

They don’t remember what they did, or how they got here. But the silence between them hums like recognition, as if the air itself remembers something they don’t.

The sound of dripping pulls me out of the dark. For a long moment, I just lie there, breathing hard, staring at a ceiling fan that ticks unevenly like a broken clock. The air smells like metal and rain. There’s something wet on my face — blood, I realize, when I touch it and feel the sting.

I sit up too fast. The room tilts. There’s someone else here — you. Sitting a few feet away, back pressed to the wall, eyes wide like you’ve just watched the world end. For a second, we just stare at each other, the silence thick enough to choke on.
